Hearing delayed on Star Tribune drivers’ contract

MINNEAPOLIS — A Teamsters official says the union and the Star Tribune have agreed to postpone a bankruptcy court hearing set for next week on the newspaper’s request to cancel its contract with unionized drivers.

Bob Moore, business agent for Teamsters Local 638, says the newspaper asked for more information about the drivers’ pension. The new hearing date is June 22.

Star Tribune spokesman Ben Taylor confirms the postponement, but had no other comment.

Moore said Friday that talks continue. The union has threatened to strike if the drivers’ contract is scrapped. The Star Tribune wants to pull out of a multi-employer pension plan that is says is costing it more than $1 million a year.

The Star Tribune filed for bankruptcy protection in January.
