Bollywood returns to Kashmir Valley

October 11th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has postponed his two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir, which was to commence on October 18. He is likely to undertake the visit in the last week of October.

October 3rd, 2009 MATTAN - A fire ritual was performed by a batch of 40 Kashmiri Pandits at the Sun Temple in Ranbirsinghpora in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district for the first time in 700 years on Friday. The All Parties Migrant Coordination Committee (APMCC), an organisation of migrant Kashmiri Pandits in the Kashmir Valley organized the event.

July 10th, 2009 SRINAGAR - Kashmir observed a shutdown on Friday over alleged human rights violations in the valley. The shutdown, called by separatists, was in the wake of incidents of killings and re-arrest of its leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.

April 11th, 2009 JAMMU - Bollywood actor Anupam Kher Saturday vowed to work for the empowerment of exiled Kashmiri Hindus and for their return to their homeland with 'honour and dignity'. Kher was speaking at a conference here to draw 'global attention toward the burning issues confronting the Kashmiri Pandits', who fled the Kashmir Valley in early 1990s as Muslim militancy peaked, at times targeting members of the community.

April 6th, 2009 SRINAGAR - Tourists visiting Jammu and Kashmir are appealling filmmakers to come back and start shooting films in the state once again. They believe that the situation is normalising and the time is ripe for film shooting to resume in the state, which has been referred to as the "heaven on earth" or the "Switzerland of the east" very often.

March 28th, 2009 JAMMU - A migrant Kashmiri Hindus' group Sunday said it would field candidates from two of the six Lok Sabha constituencies in the state. The Jammu Kashmir National United Front, a political party founded by and for the Kashmiri Pandits - Hindus who have always been seen as a political elite in the Muslim majority state - will field its candidates in their original home, the Kashmir Valley.

March 25th, 2009 SRINAGAR - An engineer-turned-legislator in Jammu and Kashmir Tuesday said he has surrendered his police security to protest 'excesses by security forces' in the valley. Sheikh Abdul Rashid, who was elected to the state legislative assembly in the November-December elections as an independent, alleged that people in the Kashmir Valley, particularly in his north Kashmir constituency, continued to suffer at the hands of security forces.
