Belgium to take in 1 former Guantanamo inmate

BRUSSELS — The Belgian government says it has accepted a U.S. request to take in one detainee from U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay.

The United States plans to close down the Guantanamo facility, and is seeking new home countries for inmates who have been cleared for release but are not able to go to their own country for fear of ill-treatment.

The Belgian Foreign Ministry says in a statement Friday that the detainee going to Belgium will receive residency papers and can obtain a work permit. It does not give the former inmate’s nationality.

Many countries in the 27-nation European Union are uneasy about accepting prisoners from Guantanamo due to perceived security threats the inmates might pose to the general public.
