Nortel bankruptcy judge denies Verizon objection

WILMINGTON, Del. — The judge presiding over the Nortel Networks bankruptcy has ruled against an objection by Verizon Communications Inc. to the sale of a Nortel unit that makes communications systems for businesses.

New Jersey-based Avaya Inc. has agreed to buy the Nortel unit for $900 million.

Verizon, a major user of Nortel products and services objected to the sale, saying Avaya’s refusal to assume contracts could leave the communications systems of Verizon business customers, including various government agencies, at risk.

Following a hearing Wednesday, the judge rejected Verizon’s arguments that the deal could harm national security and public safety, saying Verizon’s objection was largely about money.
