French explosion kills at least 2

PARIS — Local authorities say an explosion at a petrochemical plant in eastern France has killed at least two people and injured five.

An official with the local governor in Moselle, 210 miles (340 kilometers) east of Paris, says the explosion occurred Wednesday at a plant in Carling/Saint-Avold. He spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with his office’s regulations.

Several firms have factories at the site, including French oil and gas giant Total.

The office for the local governor says the cause of the explosion is not known.
