Tampa athletes to miss state meet amid flu worries

TAMPA, Fla. — Athletes from a Tampa high school were told on Monday they are being pulled from the upcoming state track meet because of a swine flu threat at their school.

The Hillsborough County School District closed Freedom High School and two middle schools this week because students from those schools are among the five suspected cases of swine flu in the county. None of the cases has been confirmed.

Freedom High’s athletic director also decided to cancel all sporting events.

Senior pole vaulter Trent Wiseman is one of about 10 athletes from Freedom High slated to miss the 3A state meet in Orlando on Friday.

“I’ve been working so hard for this and it’s not going to be there,” he said.

Cristina Alvarez, a spokeswoman for the Florida State High School Athletic Association, said on Monday the state meets for 3A and 4A schools would be held as scheduled on Friday and Saturday. She said officials were talking about whether any action needed to be taken because of the flu threat.

Florida has reported five of at least 274 cases of swine flu virus that have been confirmed in the United States so far, a count by The Associated Press shows.

Texas has already suspended all high school sports competitions until May 11 because of the flu threat.

In Mexico, where the swine flu outbreak has killed more than 20 people, Chivas defender Hector Reynoso was suspended from the Copa Libertadores soccer playoffs for pretending to cough and spit in an opponent’s face.

It was not immediately clear the length of the suspension. South America’s football governing body, CONMEBOL, said that Reynoso had 72 hours to appeal the decision.
