
As of Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at least 647 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department. The department last updated its figures Wednesday at 10 a.m. EDT.
Of those, the military reports 480 were killed by hostile action.
Outside the Afghan region, the Defense Department reports 68 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, three were the result of hostile action. The military lists these other locations as Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Ethiopia; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey; and Yemen.
There were also four CIA officer deaths and one military civilian death.

— Army Spc. Christopher M. Talbert, 24, Galesburg, Ill.; died Tuesday in Shindad, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive detonated near his vehicle; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry Regiment, Marion, Ill.
— Army Pfc. Nicolas H.J. Gideon, 20, Murrieta, Calif.; died Monday at Forward Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered in Paktya, Afghanistan after a firefight with insurgents; assigned to the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.
— Army Capt. Mark A. Garner, 30, State Road, N.C.; died Monday in Argandab District, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive detonated near his vehicle; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, Joint Multinational Readiness Center, Hohenfels, Germany.
— The following four soldiers died Monday in Konduz, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive detonated near their vehicle:
— Army 2nd Lt. Derwin I. Williams, 41, Glenwood, Ill.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 106th Cavalry Regiment, Dixon, Ill.
— Army Sgt. Brock H. Chavers, 25, Bulloch, Ga.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, Americus, Ga.
— Army Spc. Chester W. Hosford, 35, Hastings, Minn; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 106th Cavalry Regiment, Dixon, Ill.
— Army Spc. Issac L. Johnson, 24, Columbus, Ga.; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 108th Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition Squadron, Rome, Ga.
