Ari Vatanen says he will run for F1 president

NUERBURGRING, Germany — Former World Rally champion Ari Vatanen wants to replace Max Mosley as Formula One president, with the governing body facing the threat of a breakaway series.

Vatanen has spent the last 10 years as a member of European Parliament. The 57-year-old Finn is a four-time winner of the Paris-Dakar Rally.

“Responding to requests from many FIA member clubs, I shall stand for presidential elections of the FIA in October this year,” Vatanen said in a statement.

Mosley indicated last month he would not stand for a fifth term, but appears to have reversed his decision as the dispute over 2010 rules persists. He has crusaded to cut costs following Honda’s surprise withdrawal in December, with teams and the ruling body at odds over the sport’s future.

“I think the time has come for a change,” Vatanen said. “My main focus is to reconcile views within the FIA and bring transparency to its stakeholders. The duty of the president is to defend a billion automobilists and the great sport of ours.”

Eight leading teams — Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, Red Bull, BMW Sauber, Brawn GP and Toro Rosso — are ready to leave F1 after the governing body said they had no right to vote on 2010 regulations.
