A list of shootings at Freeport’s Indonesian mine

The road to Freeport’s gold mine in Indonesia’s militarized Papua province has been the site of many deadly shootings since it opened four decades ago during the Suharto dictatorship.

— August 2002: An ambush on a convoy carrying schoolteachers to the Grasberg mining complex kills two Americans and an Indonesian. Fourteen others are wounded. The incident prompts protests demanding the site’s closure.

— July 14, 2009: Freeport vehicle carrying three passengers comes under fire. No injuries.

— July 15, 2009: Two police officers wounded by gunfire, one of them critically.
