An elephant calf drowns in Purulia

September 30th, 2009 JAMSHEDPUR - Rangers of Dhalbhum Forest Range in Ghatsila region in Jharkhand managed to rescue a ten-day-old elephant calf after it got isolated from its herd and fallen in a ditch of the dense forest area. The calf was brought to the Tata Zoological Park located in Jamshedpur city, which is close to the Ghatsila on Tuesday.

September 29th, 2009 TIRUPATHI - An elephant went berserk at the Tirupathi Balaji temple in Andhra Pradesh during a ceremonial procession on Monday night. Six devotees received minor injures in the incident that took place during the Dusshera Brahmotsav at the temple.

September 24th, 2009 KANJIRAPALLY - An elephant went on a rampage in Kerala, injuring one of the mahouts and damaging three vehicles, on Wednesday. The incident took place in Kanjirapally near Kottayam, when the elephant named 'Sundaran' turned violent while pulling logs around 10 in the morning.

September 24th, 2009 JALPAIGURI - Forest authorities in West Bengal on Wednesday rescued an elephant calf, which had strayed away from the herd in Baikunthapur forest range. The calf lost its way along the banks of River Teesta and was rampantly moving on the sand strips when the forest rangers spotted it.

September 1st, 2009 VANKAL VILLAGE - An elephant stood guard near the body of its electrocuted mahout for hours in Vankal village in Gujarat. The incident took place at Vankal village of Navsari district, when the mahout, Lachhu Kevat, was electrocuted to death while sitting on his elephant, Madhumati.

August 24th, 2009 JAIPUR - A female elephant, which turned amuck and went on a rampage in Rajasthan's Jaipur city on Sunday, died here on Monday. Thirty-five year old elephant Naina, which was on its way to Amer Fort with foreign tourists on its back, had suddenly turned aggressive on Sunday.

August 17th, 2009 JALPAIGURI - A female elephant cub, which was rescued few months back from a village in West Bengal, died on Sunday due to a stomach ulcer. The elephant cub, Aronno, was rescued from Rethi village after it got separated from its group.

August 14th, 2009 COONOOR - A five-year-old elephant calf was captured by forest officials in Coonoor in Tamil Nadu. The elephant had strayed towards a human habitation after separating from its herd.

August 12th, 2009 COIMBATORE - The Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Tamil Nadu's Nilgiri district is witnessing many visitors eager to have a glimpse of two new arrivals-a baby elephant and a panther cub. Wildlife authorities here are nurturing these two babies, who are of the same age.

August 2nd, 2009 TINJHORA - Forest rangers from Chapramari Reserve Forest in West Bengal rescued a calf elephant believed to be around 15 months, after it had got separated from the herd and strayed into Tinjhora village near Chapramari Reserve Forest in Dooars region of West Bengal. It is believed that the elephant calf got separated while the herd was crossing River Murti close to the Chilcote Tea Estate located in Jalpaiguri district.

July 25th, 2009 PURULIA - The combined security forces commenced the anti-naxal operation on Saturday in West Bengal's Purulia district from Kerua Ghatbera. The combing operations covered the forests adjoining Ayodhya hills under Bagmundi police station, which were considered to be the den of the insurgents, said Rajesh Kumar Yadav, the SP of Purulia.

July 24th, 2009 BARLIYAR - An elephant died while trying to save its calf which had slipped and fallen into a pit near Katteri village in the Barliyar forest range of Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu on Thursday. The calf fell into the pit during the midnight hours and the mother elephant struggled to reach it.

April 27th, 2009 KOLKATA - West Bengal's ruling Left Front's (LF) chairman Biman Bose Monday criticised Rahul Gandhi's comparison of the state's Purulia with Orissa's Kalahandi region, saying Purulia was even better then the Congress leader's own Amethi constituency in Uttar Pradesh. 'Purulia is better than Kalahandi, it is even better than Amethi,' Bose said at a press meet in the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) headquarters in presence of all other LF allies.

March 17th, 2009 LUCKNOW - An elephant has triggered panic in an Uttar Pradesh village after killing two people and injuring four in the last 10 days, an official said Tuesday. The elephant trampled a young man to death Monday evening in Nagraganja village of Basti district, 250 km from here.

March 14th, 2009 RANCHI - Two elephants were found dead in Jharkhand, forest department officials said Saturday. One wild elephant had its tusks removed, leading to the suspicion that it had been killed by poachers.
