NEW DELHI - Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Monday stepped up by 45 percent the budgetary allocation for the flagship Bharat Nirman (Build India) programme that focuses on rural development and poverty alleviation.

India to get 46,000 km of village roads this fiscalJuly 26th, 2009 NEW DELHI - India's villages will get some 46,000 km of roads at a cost of Rs.15,000 crore ($3 billion) this fiscal (2009-10) even as the rural job guarantee scheme will be recast to drive the overall economy rather than just assure 100 days of employment, says a new policy document of the government. For the 11th Five Year Plan (2007-12), the target for village roads is 230,447 km, says the action plan, expected to be unveiled soon by Rural Development Minister C.P.

Urban development allocation increased 87 percentJuly 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - The allocation for the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission has been increased by 87 percent to Rs.12,887 crore, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said while presenting the union budget in parliament Monday. Additionally, the Indira Awas Yojna, a housing programme for the poor, has been allocated Rs.2,000 crore, while a Rs.2,000-crore special fund has been set up to finance rural housing projects.
Funds hiked 144 percent for ambitious rural job schemeJuly 6th, 2009 NEW DELHI - Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee has allocated a whopping Rs.39,100 crore for the Congress-led government's flagship scheme under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), a hefty 144 percent hike over the previous budget estimates. Reiterating the government's commitment to the scheme that promises 100 days of employment to rural youth, the finance minister said in his budget speech Monday that 4.47 crore households were covered under NREGA last year as against 3.39 crore earlier.
