KHOST - The head of Shah Khil district and a policeman were killed when one of the landmines they were trying to defuse went off in Afghanistan’s eastern Paktika province, the online news agency reported Sunday.

“Police uncovered two mines in Shah Khil district and were defusing them (the mines) when one of them suddenly went off. As a result, Shir Ali, the district chief, and one police constable were killed on the spot,” provincial police chief Daulat Khan Zadran said.

Despite the presence of over 100,000 international troops in Afghanistan to combat Islamist insurgency, violence has continued in the war-torn country.
