July 27th, 2009 ABU DHABI - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has conferred the prestigious "Order of Independence" award on Iranian envoy Hamid Reza Asefi for his contribution in bolstering ties between the two nations, WAM news agency reported Monday. UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan presented the award of "First Degree" to the outgoing Iranian diplomat Monday in appreciation of his "generous contributions to the boosting of relations of cooperation between the UAE and Iran in various areas", the report said.

April 16th, 2009 KOLKATA - A total of 74 nominations have been filed for the second phase of Lok Sabha elections in 17 of the 42 constituencies of West Bengal till Thursday. The maximum nominations - seven - have been received for the Krishnanagar and Uluberia seats, while only one candidate each filed papers for the Kanthi and Asansol seats.

April 6th, 2009 SILIGURI - Pro-Gorkhaland activists Monday greeted the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) candidate for West Bengal's Darjeeling seat with black flags when he went to file his nomination for the Lok Sabha polls. Activists of the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM), which is fighting for a separate Gorkhaland carved out of Darjeeling and other areas of north Bengal, waved black flags with 'Go Back' written on them when CPI-M's Jibesh Sarkar arrived to file his nomination papers.
