27 policemen suspended for extortion

September 15th, 2009 LUCKNOW - As many as 42 policemen were suspended here Tuesday for dereliction of duty, officials said. According to an official spokesman, these included two inspectors, two senior sub-inspectors, four sub-inspectors, eight head constables, and 26 constables.

August 31st, 2009 SRINAGAR - Three policemen were suspended and a magisterial probe was ordered on Monday, following the death of a 17-year-old boy in police custody in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district. The incident occurred at a government hospital in Jharkhand's Dumka district on Saturday.

July 8th, 2009 LUCKNOW - Three Uttar Pradesh policemen were suspended Wednesday for allegedly beating to death a 60-year-old Dalit man in their custody, an official said. Rajbal, a resident of the Shikar village in Muzaffarnagar district, died in the Chapaar police station Tuesday and his body was left outside the district hospital in Muzaffarnagar, some 350 km from Lucknow.

July 3rd, 2009 LUCKNOW - Five policemen were suspended Friday after a murder accused attempted suicide by setting himself on fire in a lock-up in Uttar Pradesh's Jyotiba Phule Nagar district, an official said. The five policemen - a sub-inspector, a head-constable and three constables - were suspended for negligence, district police chief Prashant Kumar told IANS on phone.

June 11th, 2009 LUCKNOW - Four policemen in Uttar Pradesh's Basti district were suspended Wednesday for allegedly running a sex racket from their official quarters, an official said Wednesday. June 2nd, 2009 LUCKNOW - Seven policemen have been suspended in Uttar Pradesh for laxity in investigating a case in which a Dalit man was allegedly beaten to death in the state's Azamgarh district, an official said Tuesday. "The policemen were placed under suspension today (Tuesday) following the directives issued by the state police chief Vikram Singh," Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Brij Lal told reporters.

April 5th, 2009 RANCHI - Three policemen were killed and six others were injured when a minibus carrying them dashed against a tree in East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand Sunday, the police said. According to the police, around 20 policemen were in the minibus, when the vehicle's driver lost control and hit a tree near Jora flyover in the district, around 170 km from Ranchi, Sunday afternoon.

April 2nd, 2009 PATNA - Five policemen were suspended for distributing sweets among Janata Dal-United (JD-U) workers in Bihar's Rohtas district during the filing of nomination papers for the Lok Sabha polls by politician Mahabali Singh, officials said Thursday. 'The five police bodyguards were suspended Wednesday on charges of distributing sweets among JD-U workers during the filing of nomination papers by Mahabali Singh in a violation of the model code of conduct,' Rohtas Superintendent of Police Vikas Vaibhav told IANS.
