2 Ark. prison escapees captured in New York state
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A pair of convicted murderers were captured in New York state Tuesday after a 20-mile chase in the same car they used to flee from an Arkansas prison last week while wearing guard uniforms.
Calvin Adams, 39, and Jeffrey Grinder, 32, jumped from their car when it slowed in Hornell, N.Y., and were captured after a brief foot chase, authorities said. No one was hurt.
The car bearing Missouri tags coasted a short distance and hit a street sign, said Hornell police Chief Ted Murray.
Authorities said the chase began in the Allegany County town of Angelica in rural western New York, not far from the Pennsylvania border, after a state trooper tried to make a routine traffic stop. The trooper had earlier observed the car failing to signal a lane change, authorities said.
Earlier Tuesday, authorities in Arkansas said they had arrested three people suspected of leaving the getaway vehicle for the inmates at the Cummins Unit prison about 90 miles southeast of Little Rock last Friday night.
Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler said police arrested Deana Davison and Ryan McKinney, both of Little Rock, and Michael Stephenson of Jacksonville. The three were arrested and charged Saturday with furnishing an implement for escape, a felony, Sadler said.
State police said they didn’t know if the three had lawyers.
Grinder and Adams were each convicted of capital murder and were serving life sentences without parole when video surveillance showed them putting on the uniforms in the prison library after a 6 p.m. headcount. Making guard uniforms is among the jobs available for inmates at the prison.
They walked out of the prison unchallenged during a shift change soon afterward and drove away in the car left for them, Arkansas Correction Department spokeswoman Dina Tyler said.
Five Correction Department officers assigned to guard the entry and exit points of the prison have been put on unpaid leave while the department investigates.
The state planned to begin proceedings to bring Adams and Grinder back to Arkansas, and Tyler said the pair could be back within days if they don’t fight extradition.
