NEW DELHI - At least 18 workers were injured Tuesday evening when a building under constuction collapsed in east Delhi, police said.

“We received a call around 4:40 p.m. today (Tuesday) that an under construction building has collapsed in Ramnagar area of Shahdara of east Delhi. Eyewitnesses told us that construction was going on in the basement of the building when its second floor collapsed,” a senior police officer said.

Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot for the rescue operations.

“At least 18 workers suffered injuries in the incident. They were rushed to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. The owner of the building has been identified as Subhash Verma,” the police officer added.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi also ordered an inquiry into the building collapse.

Municipal Commissioner K.S. Mehra has directed the chief vigilance officer to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the building collapse, specially focussing on the cause and the responsibility of the officials concerned, according to an official statement.

The report is to be submitted within three days.
