June 14th, 2009 SURAT - A day after an enraged mob attacked three men accused of rape, two of whom are sons of policemen, the Gujarat government ordered Sunday that the men would be tried in a fast track court. The men, Shahid Saiyad, Tariq Saiyad - both sons of policemen posted in Surat - and Abu Bakr Sheikh, are accused of raping a 17-year-old girl in a moving car June 12 and video filming the act.

March 20th, 2009 SURAT - The Surat police Thursday took custody of a man wanted in 24 cases of murder, kidnapping and extortion across the country from a Delhi Police team which nabbed him Wednesday in the national capital, the police said. Fazlur Rehman, 30, a resident of Surat in south Gujarat, had been eluding arrest since 2003 after a case of extortion was filed by Shivnarayan Devkinandan Agarwal, the owner of Praful Sarees, in Surat city.

January 19th, 2009 AHMEDABAD - The investigative wing of the Income-Tax department raided the factory premises of 40 textile and paint manufacturers in Surat Tuesday, an official said. The raids were conducted by a team of 150 sleuths, with senior officials from the Rajkot Income Tax Commissionerate joining in the raids.
