14 soldiers killed fighting forest fire in Nepal

KATMANDU, Nepal — Officials says 14 soldiers have been killed while trying to put out a forest fire in a village in Nepal’s mountainous northeast.

Government administrator Jitendra Bhandari says 150 soldiers have been fighting the fire since Wednesday. They were trying to stop the fire from reaching a local hospital but some became trapped on Thursday when the wind changed direction.

Bhandari said the 14 charred bodies were recovered but had not yet been identified.

Ramechap is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northeast of the capital Katmandu.
