12 killed in Pakistan clashes between tribal volunteers, militants

October 3rd, 2009 ISLAMABAD - Eleven militants and a soldier were killed Saturday in clashes in the northwestern tribal region of Pakistan that borders Afghanistan, a security official said. Fazal-ur-Rehman, a spokesman for the paramilitary Frontier Corps, said in a statement that the fighting took place during a security operation in Gurgray area of the Khyber region.

September 24th, 2009 ISLAMABAD - Militants have killed seven tribal chiefs in Pakistan's Bannu district, TV channels reported Thursday. The seven dead tribal elders were members of peace committee bodies supporting the Pakistani government against militants.

September 22nd, 2009 ISLAMABAD - At least 34 suspected militants have died in clashes in Pakistan's South and North Waziristan while the Taliban claim to have killed 45 security personnel, media reports said Tuesday. Gunship helicopters pounded militant hideouts in South Waziristan, killing at least 26 suspected militants while injuring several others, Dawn reported Tuesday.

August 12th, 2009 ISLAMABAD - At least 70 people were killed and dozens injured Tuesday in clashes between Taliban militants and a pro-government militia in Pakistan's ungoverned tribal belt that borders Afghanistan, intelligence officials said Wednesday. The fighting erupted when dozens of militants loyal to local Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud, attacked the followers of Turkistan Bittani, who allied with the government after defecting the Taliban, in Jandola area of tribal district South Waziristan.

August 7th, 2009 PESHAWAR - A local lashkar (tribal militia) in Pakistan's Upper Dir region has claimed to have killed at least 167 Taliban militants in last two months. Two months ago, around 200 villagers formed a lashkar to avenge the June 5 mosque bombing that killed 38 people in Hayagai Sharqai village, the Daily Times reports.

June 19th, 2009 PESHAWAR - Taliban militants have blown up two schools in Bajaur tribal agency in northwest Pakistan, a media report said Friday. The militants have destroyed dozens of schools in the area in the recent past.

May 2nd, 2009 ISLAMABAD - Two soldiers and 16 Taliban militants were killed when paramilitary troops repulsed an attack on their checkpoint in Pakistan's restive northwestern tribal district of Mohmand, officials said Saturday. 'Around 100 militants attacked a security forces check post in Spinal Tangi last night (Friday),' said a press statement from the Pakistan Army.

March 26th, 2009 ISLAMABAD - At least four militants were killed Thursday in a suspected US missile strike in Pakistan's north-western tribal region near Afghanistan, an intelligence official said. Two missiles believed to have been fired from a US pilotless aircraft hit a house in Mir Ali area of the North Waziristan tribal district, destroying the structure.

January 9th, 2009 ISLAMABAD - At least 11 people have been killed and 30 injured in sectarian clashes in northwest Pakistan, media reported Saturday. The clashes between two rival groups broke out Friday evening in Hangu district of North-West Frontier Province, private Geo TV channel said.
