10 workers killed in Chhattisgarh road accident

October 5th, 2009 RAIPUR - The Chhattisgarh government Monday suspended a senior labour official after an under-construction chimney collapsed at a Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd (Balco) power plant Sep 23, and left 45 workers killed under its debris. Satyaprakash Verma, assistant labour commissioner, was suspended on chages of dereliction duty for remaining absent in the aftermath of the tragedy from Korba town without informing his senior, a state government statement said.

The state government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident that took place when about 100 workers and engineers were engaged in the construction work at Balco Nagar area, some 250 km north of state capital Raipur.

August 19th, 2009 JAKARTA - At least 25 people were killed and 13 injured when a truck packed with up to 100 people overturned and slipped into a ditch in Central Kalimantan province on the Indonesian part of Borneo Island, a media report said Wednesday. The accident took place Tuesday night when the truck carrying around 100 workers from an oil palm plantation crashed in the district of Sampit, MetroTV reported.

August 2nd, 2009 HARARE - Thirty-seven people were killed Sunday when a passenger bus and a truck collided head on in northern Zimbabwe, police said. One of the victims was from the truck, while the rest were from the bus.

July 9th, 2009 RAIPUR - Two workers of a steel unit in Siltara industrial area on the outskirts of this Chhattisgarh capital were killed Thursday when they touched a live wire, police said. Raj Bihari and Rampal were electrocuted near a water storage tank of Ghankun steel plant.

June 12th, 2009 LA PAZ - Twelve people have been killed and several others injured when the bus in which they were travelling veered off the road and fell into a deep ravine in Bolivia. The accident occurred Thursday in the central Bolivian region of Cochabamba.

April 29th, 2009 RAIPUR - At least eight people, including two women and a four-year-old boy, were killed and 18 seriously injured in Chhattisgarh's Raipur district Wednesday when the bus they were travelling in hit a tree and turned turtle, police said. The accident took place in Mainpur area, some 125 km from here, when the driver of the speeding private bus lost control and hit a huge tree, said Lambodar Patel, in-charge of the Mainpur police station.

April 9th, 2009 RAIPUR - At least 12 people were killed and about 40 injured in a road accident late Wednesday in Chhattisgarh, the police said. The tragic incident took place in Durg district's Pasuli village when an overcrowded van returning from an engagement ceremony collided head-on with a truck.

February 11th, 2009 RAIPUR - As many as nine people, including two children, were killed Thursday when the van they were travelling in fell into a canal in Chhattisgarh, police said. The incident took place in Korba district's Sonpuri village, some 225 km north of here.
