Google Chrome for Mac OS X and Linux: First Impression

google-chrome-browser A raw version of Google Chrome browser for Mac and Linux has been pre-released. Those working on Mac and Linux might have another browser to rejoice but the story is far from complete. Well, the test version of the browser is a novice that knows no printing, Flash and lack even a bookmark manager. It's not even in beta. Probably this is why the project leaders Mike Smith and Karen Grunberg have emphasized "DON'T DOWNLOAD THEM!" Well, it also bears in addition that you try them only if you like incomplete, crash-prone software. With much of it on the lee-side there's a relief that it'll have updates more frequently that no browser would opt for.

5 Most Useful Chrome Browser Shortcuts

Like GMail Chrome allows really useful shortcuts. Some of my favorites are:

  1. You can drag a link between tabs to open the link in a new tab in the specified position on the tab strip.
  2. Ctrl1-8 allows you to switch tabs by tab position on the strip. Ctrl-9 switched to the last tab.
  3. Like Firefox you can drag the tab to a different position in the tab strip, the UI is smoother.
  4. Use Ctrl-Shift-T to reopen the last closed tab. Chrome remembers last 10 closed tabs.
  5. Many Firefox and windows shortcuts work as expected like Alt-F4 to close current windows, use Ctrl-w to close current tab, Ctrl-Tab to switch to next tab, Ctrl-Shift-Tab to switch to previous tab etc.

Warning: Google Chrome Browser Has Serious Memory & CPU Issues

The test machine runs on Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4 Ghz (x2) with 2GB RAM. I tried loading single page PHP manual (16.5 MB) on Windows Vista from our local server with 100Mbps LAN connecting it. At the same time I was running the Javascript console to measure performance of page loading. I was also searching for the term cgi in the page being loaded. It takes about 2 minutes to load it in Firefox. 20 minutes later the page was still loading in Google Chrome!

The page up / page down keys were pretty unresponsive in the tab as well as the Javascript console. It appears Google Chrome parses pages as it loads the. As of the time of this writing the single tab with PHP manual has consumed 576 MB of RAM and still increasing. I could see the Javascript Console was using the same process which explains which it was hanging along with the browser tab. Read after the break for more details.
