Sun Microsystems (JAVA) bought Montalvo System, a Silicon Valley semiconductor startup which is still in stealth mode.
Montalvo Systems succintly describes itself as a “well funded fabless semiconductor startup funded by prominent Silicon Valley venture capital firms”.

I am serious. While MySQL is a great open source database, I have full respect to Sun’s plan to provide high-end features for paying customers only. After all they are in the business of making money and not philanthropy, last I checked.

As you all probably know by now Sun decided to sell Windows 2003 servers (gasp, sputter… Scott McNealy would surely turn in his grave on hearing this news; wait a minute, he is still the Chairman of Sun) on its hardware. The key question on everyone’s mind is has Sun finally found a direction as Microsoft’s partner or has Sun joined the dark side as some would like to say or has Sun finally lost its marbles or whether it is really a strategically brilliant move? Significantly Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun Microsystems, is eerily silent on his blog about this initiative and continues to promote OpenOffice as an alternative to Microsoft Office. Kind of gives you a clear indication where Sun (NASDAQ: SUNW) is headed, doesn’t it? It does give me a warm feeling too knowing Sun is so much committed to Java, a language I have been working on since 1996. The change will go into effect on Aug. 27.
