WordPress Plugin Version 1.1 (Latest): Automatic Machine Translation for Your Blog in Eight Languages - Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese

June 10th, 2005 by Angsuman Chakraborty

Update:
This plugin has been superseded by Angsuman’s Translator Plugin Pro, which not only contains all the great features of this plugin but lot’s more. All the defects and enhancement requests of this plugin has been done in the pro version, it offers significantly improved performance by caching, provides better translation for asian languages like Chinese & Japanese and more.

Please get translator pro version here.

What’s New:

  1. Option to generate slimmer list of icons (maximum 5 icons in a row). Now you can use <?php create_translator_bar(true); ?> to create a slimmer version as can be seen in this site.
The default is to create a wider version with all the icons in a single row by using <?php create_translator_bar(); ?>

Please refer to Configuration and Usage section for further details.

  2. Warning message was being generated, when php is running in safe mode, in earlier version. This has been rectified.
  3. Ability to revert to the original language (English) has been provided by adding an extra icon for English. It simply redirects to the original non-translated version of the blog.
Users can download one of two available versions. Download this if you prefer US Flag to represent English language and this if you prefer UK flag to represent English language. Both of them are otherwise identical.
  4. Added width and height values to img tag.

Download the current version of the plugin.
The width and height parameters have been added.

  6. MacManX Says:

Angsuman, I’m getting an error 500 when I try to translate with the latest release of your plugin. My server error log shows a “Premature end of script headers” error for the plugin. The first v1.1 release still works perfectly.

  7. MacManX Says:

Never mind, I figured it out. The plugin file in the new release is CHMOD 666, but it has to be CHMOD 644 to function properly. Don’t quote me on that though, it may be an issue specific to my server configuration.

  8. Angsuman Says:

I am glad the problem was solved. It was probably because you have some sort of restrictions in permissions of executable (php) scripts in force as you surmised.

In both cases I zipped the file in Windows 2000 (my development platform) which doesn’t care much about these permissions. It is surprising how the permissions changed.

  9. Adam Messinger Says:

In a future version, could you omit text within code tags from being translated? The plugin is great, but it wreaks havoc on code samples.

Out of curiosity, what translation engine are you using?

  10. Angsuman Says:

    @Adam
    Google

    > In a future version, could you omit text within code tags from being translated? The plugin is great, but it wreaks havoc on code samples.

Good idea. It would however be interesting to implement.

  11. Reno Says:

Very nice… again!! Question - do you know if this works with wp-cache ie once the page has been shown and translated once, it is then served from wp-cache statically?

  12. Angsuman Says:

    @Reno
Yes. I am using wp-cache myself.

  13. Reno Says:

just wondering if there is a way to hide the big ‘nasty’ url to something like http://domainname.com/‘language’/ ? Would a fight with the .htaccess be in order?

  14. Angsuman Says:

Another good idea. No, I prefer non-htaccess solution. I am lately so swamped that I couldn’t take up the second version I promised. I promise (again) to complete it this weekend.

I think I should charge for it which will give me more impetus :)

  15. Terry McKay II Says:

Can you please add the Russian Language??

Also please look at my site loststronghold.com, when the Japanese language is selected the site is broken. Any thoughts??

    Thanks in advance

  16. » Added a translation plugin Says:

[...] I just added the Simple thoughts translation plugin as you can see on the sidebar, it of course uses machine translation though so I’m sure it isn’t precise but my multi-lingual capabilities are not very good unless you’re talking about programming langauges so if anyone speaks one of the languages included can you take a quick gander for me to see how good of a job it does so I know if it is worth keeping or not? « What is the point of shrink wrap on DVDs? [...]

  17. Lane Says:

Further to my problem. I’ve resolved it. I finally noticed someone mention a 500 error (which is an Internal Server Error). Your script comes with the file mod’d to 666. Changing it to 644 resolved the problem for me.

  18. G Says:

Looks like a great tool, is it also available for textpattern?

  19. Beginner Millionaire » The WordPress Plug-In List for Niche Bloggers Says:

[...] Translator - This plug-in translates your blog to 8 languages. You’ll need to add a line of code to your sidebar (or wherever you want to flag icons representing and linking to the translation). 28. Roger Says:

    Hi.

Plugin looks great. Can i second the request of Reno (from Sept 2005) that some kind of URL changing/masking be implemented in the next release?

If you could give me some tips on what functions to use etc i’ll start learning and give it a go myself - i can code but am a bit rusty on php.

    Cheers

  29. Angsuman Chakraborty Says:

I have implemented it. Last few days have been very hectic as there was an attack against my server using a Mambo exploit.

[...] Angsuman’s Translator Plugin Pro replaces and supercedes the original popular Translator Plugin for WordPress and subsequent revisions. After the initial release and wide acceptance of our WordPress Translator plugin, we have spent enormous amount of time working out the kinks of different translator engines. We pre-process and post-process the translated data to ensure as closeness as possible to the original page content and layout. We have tried to provide you the best automatic machine translation within the limits of today’s machine translation technology and in many cases we have overcome and improved upon the translated output. We use multiple third-party translation services to provide you with the best possible machine translation. [...]

  33. Fausto Says:

My Blog is written in Spanish.

Would this plugin do the same job if my blog is written in any other language than English?

  34. Angsuman Chakraborty Says:

We will support it in the next major release (ver. 3) of the plugin along with few other foreign languages.

The key challenge is providing an acceptable quality of machine translation.

Looking forward to hear your thoughts.
