Full Content RSS Feeds Compounding the Splog Problem?October 21st, 2005 It appears to me full content RSS feeds are actually helping and compounding the splog (spam blog) problem. June 28th, 2005 at 8:59 pm
Thanks MacManx for the appreciation and for encouraging me to write the plugin.
June 29th, 2005 at 1:40 am
Not a problem, Angsuman. ^_^ I’m glad that you released it, this is something that the WP community has been continually asking for.
Unfortunately, I’m running into some troubles that may or may not be related to the plugin. Most of them are actually related to WP in general. I’ll blog on that in a bit. Would you mind contacting me via email if you can? Comments are such an informal way to communicate these days.
June 29th, 2005 at 2:23 am
It is working? Great.
I’m using NetNewsWire Lite 2.0b41 and the notice doesn’t appear in that for my blog but James, yours does! Hence I thought it wasn’t working on my site.
Apologies for that - must be a NetNewsWire Lite issue (?)
June 29th, 2005 at 2:49 am
@Tom
WordPress & NewsReaders have a combined issue. When posts are not changed, WordPress issues a “Not Changed” HTTP header(304?). So even if you ask your Feed Reader to refresh/update, it ignores you and continues to show the old feed.
So while I was testing I repeatedly deleted my feed from the feed reader and added it
That might be why you were having a problem in veiwing the copyright.
Let me know if that solves your problem.

This is fabulous. I hope you don’t mind, I’ve used it on my end to insert non copywrite related text but obviously kept your ‘plug’. Question is, do you think it would be hard to trigger a different spot of text depending on the category of the post? I’ll have a play myself but I’ll likely break it
September 2nd, 2005 at 3:11 pm
Does this plug-in work when your feed only sends out extracts? I would still prefer people to visit my site, so I only include about half of the posts in the feed, and the copyright does not show for me.
September 3rd, 2005 at 12:31 am
@John No. That is because of limitations of WordPress.
I will see if it is possible to circumvent it in latest version of WP.
@Reno No problem. Thanks for keeping the plug
> do you think it would be hard to trigger a different spot of text depending on the category of the post?
I can do it.
What exactly are you looking for and why if I may ask?
September 6th, 2005 at 10:44 am
Angsuman: Thanks for confirming the plug-in not working on extracts.
If possible, it would be great if you can add an option for us to turn it on or off for extracts. I don’t mind providing a good bit of text, say 50%, as an extract, but to provide this much, I would want a copyright displayed.
If not, it is still a great plug-in.
September 6th, 2005 at 11:55 am
@John
> Thanks for confirming the plug-in not working on extracts.
I had already indicated it upfront in the article itself.
This is due to a limitation of WordPress hooks. Not sure if WP team has rectified it in the latest release; will check.
September 8th, 2005 at 12:17 pm
Would it be difficult to not have the copyright message included in every feed item but just every ‘n’ items or perhaps only once per feed refresh?
September 8th, 2005 at 12:38 pm
@Reno
No.

[...] Due to an overwhelming response of one to zero, MacManX.com’s RSS and Atom feeds are now presented in full HTML glory with a little bit of added copyright protection spice from Angsuman’s Feed Copyrighter Plugin. As these new full content feeds will allow my content to be “re-blogged” by certain content-stealing sites, I have taken a more robust approach to hotlink protection. All approved domains will be able to display images from my feed and follow links to my media files, but all other will simply display broken images and trigger 403 (Access Denied) errors when attempting to link to my media files. Regular news aggregators are not affected by this, but online news aggregators are. The current approved domains are MacManX.com (of course), bloglines.com, newsgator.com, and rojo.com. If you are reading this post in your news aggregator and cannot view the image below, please contact me via the comments section or email, and I will attempt to approve your aggregator. According to US Copyright Law, the proper format for a copyright notice is NAME OF THE WORK © YEAR AUTHOR. The default arrangement of the terms does not seem to follow this arrangement, however I was able to modify the copyright portion of the plugin to reflect that format.
Thanks again for creating this! Very useful!

November 4th, 2005 at 6:02 pm
Hello,
I have this question. Is there a way to create a ‘white-list’ of IP addresses or domain names authorized to display in their websites/blogs the articles that one writes? I ask because I wouldn’t like the copyright notice to appear on those sites/blogs that I’ve authorized to syndicate my content. Or better yet, to have a copyright notice stating something like this: “this site has the authorization of blog.example.com to display this article” or something like that so that your content would still be protected.
Well, I guess this was more a suggestion than a question… but, would something like this be possible?
Thanks!
Jon
November 5th, 2005 at 6:12 am
@Jon
The message is appended to the feed. It cannot be known where and how the feed will be displayed. So it is not possible to customize it directly.
There are still a couple of options to do what you need. I am looking into it.

Hi Angsuman
Thanks for this useful plugin!
I’ve just been customising it a bit, and I was wondering about the behaviour of the “date” section.
If I’m understanding the PHP correctly, the Copyright date shown will be the current year - the year in which the feed was generated. But I’m thinking that a more desirable behaviour would be for the copyright year to be that in which the article was written. They might not always be the same (esp just after the year date changes).
I wonder if there is a way for the plugin to call the date of the article instead?
might look into that myself, but anyway, thought I would mention it here too.
cheers
Jennifer

Following on from yesterday’s post, I found out you can use something like:
$post_time=get_the_time(’Y');
get_the_time() is similar to the_time() but returns the result rather than displaying it. In the context of add_filter(’the_content’ (… etc), it knows we’re talking about the current post.
… just in case you wanted to do a tweak
September 28th, 2007 at 11:11 am
Jennifer,
Showing copyright for the current year is the
standard practice. The fact is that you own perpetual copyright to the article. So legally it makes more sense to show it for the current year.

Will this plugin work for WordPress v2.61 and v2.62? It appears to only be tested for WP v1.5x
Your technical page has a download link in the Download section, but it does not mention the patch that is given in a link at the top of the Technical page. So, does the Download section’s download link give us the patch too or are we to download both?
thanks.

WordPress & NewsReaders have a combined issue. When posts are not changed, WordPress issues a “Not Changed” HTTP header(304?). So even if you ask your Feed Reader to refresh/update, it ignores you and continues to show the old feed.

Great work!

Uno de los primeros es Splog Reporter, un servicio para reporta splogs. Otra forma es usar una utilidad como Feed Copyrighter plugin, es un plugin para wordpress que nos permite añadir un mesaje de copyright al feed.

It seems to work great! Amazing! I really like this, it makes tracking your visitors so much more vivid…Sigh…
The weblog-thingie I am using it on isn’t online yet, when it is, I will use this amazing plugin to the fullest!
Thanks!

If I’m understanding the PHP correctly, the Copyright date shown will be the current year - the year in which the feed was generated. But I’m thinking that a more desirable behaviour would be for the copyright year to be that in which the article was written. They might not always be the same (esp just after the year date changes).

It is a simple plugin that adds a short copyright notice to the footer of each feed entry. By default, this notice warns users that, if they are reading the content on any site other than the original, the person is guilty of copyright infringement. However, the plugin can be trivially modified, even by a non-coder like myself, to say just about anything else, including express a Creative Commons License.

If possible, it would be great if you can add an option for us to turn it on or off for extracts. I don’t mind providing a good bit of text, say 50%, as an extract, but to provide this much, I would want a copyright displayed.
If not, it is still a great plug-in.
