WordPress Plugin: AdRotator - Ad Rotating Solution for your Ads (including AdSense, Clicksor, Chitika etc.)
Contents
Overview
Displays an advertisement (which is randomly selected from a group of advertisements specified in a text file) at your chosen location. Tested on WordPress 1.5 & 2.x. Should work with earlier and later versions (future and past proofed). It can also be used with other CMS systems or anywhere where PHP is supported.
It does one job and does it well. Enough said.
If you find this useful, let me know. Links are appreciated too.
Note: Contact me for custom modification requests.
Requirements
AdRotator was created with few simple requirements.
- It should allow rotating (randomly) between any number of advertisements (or other code or images etc.)
- It should be efficient.
- It should be simple to use.
- It should be simple to install.
- It should be simple to uninstall.
Usage
This can be used to distribute your Ads impressions between various providers and to provide variety to users.
It can also be used to randomly include any other code or even to randomly display images, text messages etc. The usage is limited by your imagination only. You can also use it to display rotating advertisement within your posts or pages.
The code can be used with non-WordPress systems too.
Update: You can refer to my comments below for further clarifications and an example of the text file.

Is this rotator supposed to exchange ads continuously while viewing the same page or is does it Only changes ads as you change pages on the blog? I installed it and if I go to different category pages, it does change the ad with each new page viewed. Do you know of any plugin that will keep them changing on the same page or am I just getting this wrong? thanks!
May 30th, 2005 at 9:00 pm
It changes ad with each viewing of each page. You can reload the page to test it.
> Do you know of any plugin that will keep them changing on the same page or am I just getting this wrong?
No. AFAIK it is not recommended by Google and many Ad providers as it leads to artificial increase in page impressions. Check the TOS before you go that route.

What if I am publishing my own banners? I have simple src tags in the footer.php and sidebar.php in my WordPress Theme. Can I rotate multiple banners in the footer, or in between posts?
Thanks

Sure. No problem.

Anywhere you want.

Angsuman,
I’m the guy from WP forums who is STILL having problems making some rotating ads work. You dropped by and offered your services– which I greatly appreciate.
You say this AD ROTATOR is easy and requires little coding. I’ve read this ‘manual’ twice and must politely disagree.
1. I completed the first step, uploading and activating the plugin. Very clear.
2. You then ask me to create a .txt file. I’m pretty sure I know what you mean, but right there some people won’t. I’m a Mac user that believes I can create such a file in text edit, but I’m unsure if I need to do so in some binary or ascii mode, neither of which mean anything to me but I that I see now and again.
3. Even worse:
“Each of these files contains one or more lines. Each line contains the Ad code for any particular advertisement.” This is very vague. Lines of what? What ad code? What does it look like, exactly, since in code EXACT matters.
**************
My best suggestion: create and post an example banners.txt file, with example ad code in it.
My personal request is that you DON’T force us to identically sized banners.
Any help would be greatly GREATLY appreciated,
Jerome

@Jerome and others
> You then ask me to create a .txt file
I mean create a text file with .txt extension.
> “Each of these files contains one or more lines. Each line contains the Ad code for any particular advertisement.” This is very vague. Lines of what? What ad code? What does it look like, exactly, since in code EXACT matters.
> Lines of what?
“Each line contains the Ad code for any particular advertisement.”
> What ad code?
Your advertisers like Google / Chitika etc. gives your certain text to insert in your webpage / template. That is commonly referred to as ad code.
> What does it look like, exactly, since in code EXACT matters.
It depends on your advertiser. See the example below for my advertisers code.
> My best suggestion: create and post an example banners.txt file, with example ad code in it.
You got it - sample adrotator file - adrotator_example.txt
> My personal request is that you DON’T force us to identically sized banners.
I don’t. You can have any number of banners of any sizes; all different even.
Not only that you can use them in as many locations as you want; you can also have certain ads display with more frequency than others etc.
October 11th, 2005 at 1:40 pm
Dear Sir,
You rock. Thank you so much for the sample.txt youp posted. It helped me figure out little nuances and such and was greatly appreciated.
What would make this plugin really easy– maybe:
1. We upload and activate the php.plugin
2. It creates a control panel under ‘manage’
3. It allows us to name and create a .txt file in the default location; as well as a default position/folder for images
4. It offers fields for html, descriptions, and images
This may be asking a lot, but what I’m trying to do is reduce the potential of error for the novice like myself
******************
But THANK YOU thank you THANK YOU for you help in this matter.
******************
There isn’t a way to make this somehow work for a PHPboard, is there? (I managed to get the javascript thing to work there.)
October 11th, 2005 at 10:28 pm
@Jerome
Thanks for your compliments.
I will keep your suggestions in mind for the next version.
> There isn’t a way to make this somehow work for a PHPboard, is there?
It is very easy to make it work anywhere. I may soon put up a generic version for other systems.

I have been trying to use your rotator script rotating AddSense and other text advertising but AddSense just would not show. I have converted the add code to one liner but it does not come up. Other lines do show up but not the ASense line.
Can you tell me if it does work with AddSense in general or is their code incompatible with this script?
I do not want to cut the code in two parts as you mention in the User mannual, but rather keep it all in the txt file.
Can you please tell me if it does work with AddSense.
If yes, can you please look into this code and may be tell me what is wrong here.
Thank you.

That is kind of tricky so I don’t recommend it.

Please check the documentation. Essentially I call getad with different file names.
> Also, is it possible to make the ads appear at the bottom of each post?
Yes. In this blog I use AdRotator to display AdSense ad at the bottom of each post. Just add the line in your template after the post code.

Angsuman:
I got the plugin to work correctly. However, I have two ad banners displaying on my blog at the same time: A leaderboard and a wide skyscraper. I’d like to have both of them rotate Google AdSense and Yahoo Publisher Network ads — but displaying 2 AdSense or 2 YPN ads at the same time.
Right now, the Rotator randomizes it so that some of the time, for example, the leaderboard will show an AdSense ad, and the skyscraper shows a YPN ad, on the same page refresh. As I understand it, this violates both networks’ TOS.
Any way to control this?
Thanks for your work here.

In the user manual, you mentioned that
“Finally you need to specify a location to display your ads. Add the code in your template.”

By the way, how can I add ”ads code-php” to each page or post in Wordpress hosting ?

March 26th, 2006 at 11:04 am
You may just need to add it to one file in your template. It depends on where you want to show the ad. For example if you want to show it in sidebar then add it to sidebar.php.
If on the main page then add it to index.php etc.
Hope you get the idea.
March 26th, 2006 at 9:04 pm
Thanks for your help.
I still hope you go to details for “Page”,not for “post” in categories.
Because I did not find index.php related with “page”,and I have created severl “pages”,maybe I need to add ads in the middle of specific page.
So can I access folder ‘public_html/wp-content/cache/id/pages/specific_page.php ‘ ,and add [] code to “middle area” of page ?
Thanks
March 26th, 2006 at 9:08 pm
Revised:
ADD[] mean ads code [php echo getad('Ad File Name');]
March 26th, 2006 at 10:17 pm
You are misunderstanding. Displaying of pages is determined by the template pages in your theme.
You have to make changes there. Please check the files in your theme and WordPress documentation in codex to understand how it works.
You don’t have to worry about cache for making any changes.

Great plugin. I’m experiencing some difficulty though.
I’m trying to use it to rotate a series of Amazon Associate links that use the tag.
I’m using WP 2.2 w/ the default them w/ widgets enabled. I tried putting the php call inside a text widget in the Sidebar–no effect. I got it to work a bit but the variables inside the link cut off the rest of the widgets that were below it in the sidebar.
So then I put the php call in the bottom of the Sidebar.php theme page, just before the final tag. It worked about 60% of the time but made the rest of the site unstable, esp. in IE (where the reloads were particularly catastrophic).
I’m wondering if it has to do w/ the tag unless you have some advice about better placement in the Sidebar.php or a little code to wrap it in. You can access my ad file here.
Thanks again.
April 30th, 2006 at 7:46 pm
In the above, the tag referred to in the link is the “iframe” tag.
On the php page, I refer to the “div” tag.
They were originally cut out of the post. Sorry!

Hi! I’ve been using AdRotator for some time with no complaints (and much praise!) but now I’ve finally run into a question.
I want to include two different Google Referrer ads– one for Firefox, one for Picasa. I added the script to display the ads in my template, and I have the
line in my .txt file.
I also have my own banner (for my book “Brave Men Run”) in rotation.
The “Brave Men Run” and the Picasa ads rotate no problem… but the Firefox ad doesn’t seem to be in the rotation. Is it not possible to have two different Google programs rotate in the same spot?
Many thanks!

I’m trying to use this with AdSense. I’ve read everything on this site. I’ve seen the example.txt file.
I must be missing something. In my template, I have the google code for formatting the text ads. At the end of the format code I call the plugins php function. In my txt file I put the line from google. I’m getting the same ads. No matter how many lines of ads I put. If I remove the script line the urls show up but are not formatted.
Also, how do I get the correct tags for the google ads I want. They are hidden in other sites.

I read the blog, comments and manual. put it up, turned it on and it worked first time! This was a breeze to put together and I am a code novice. Of course I have a question. I have five banner ads on my site that I need to rotate through so that the top most ad is random. I can load your “code call” five times, but sometimes that ends up with two duplicate ads showing at the same time. People come to my site 2 or three times a week — I want to sell the fact that there ad is always “up” and that the order of ads is random.
Is this possible?

Great plugin, downloaded and installed it easily on a number of websites.
As all my sites also run wp-cache it does act differently then usual.
In my case the banner is cached for the time wp-cache is caching a particular page (with standard wp-cache settings that is 3600 seconds). No problem there - each page loads a different banner and the banners change on reload *after* the cache is reset.

Hi - I downloaded your adrotator script to my WP (v2.0.4) blog and I cannot get it to display. I’ve tried it in the header and footer templates, I’ve read thru the manual, looked thru WordPress forums for help and I can’t see what’s wrong. The txt file is created & fine, saved under /wp-content with simple banners and their links one per line, the formatting of the div section is fine as I’ve tested that with independent ads. The script is activated in the plugin area, the insertion script is copied directly from your manual with the appropriate file name. But nothing shows and when you view the source of the page, there is no code showing up for your script. The div tag (topads) it sits in is empty. Any ideas on what’s happening here? I’d really like to make use of this script as it sounds perfect for what I’m needing.

dont copy sample code in this post.
php echo getad(’bannerad’)
( change this key ‘ -> Apostrophe key)

Please make sure you have included:
<php echo getad(’banner_ad_text_file’) ?>
banner_ad_text_file is the text file name without the txt extension.

Thx for the tips but I have that code in place already as you have indicated. Copied it straight from your manual:
where I have removed appropriate question marks for the php start & end code for this post and topbanner is the txt file I created as per your sample.
Any other suggestions as to what I may have missed?

oh picklejuice the code didn’t come thru, sorry. Here, let me try this:
Remove the Xs and dashes replace the single quote. (How did you get your code lines to show?)
August 9th, 2006 at 7:35 pm
Still not showing, darn it and sorry. You’ll have to take it for granted that I copied your code line directly from your manual and that the php call line structure is identical to yours, with the appropriate substitution of the file name as you show.

Can you please email me the exact code you included with the following information:
1. You blog url
2. Your text file name
3. Exact code you have included

Hi, I’m also not getting it to work, and have also followed instructions to the letter. Is there something broken with the plug-in and the later versions of WordPress?
August 16th, 2006 at 10:51 am
OK, sorted it. I think it’s absolutely essential that you make sure everyone understand that you need to use flat text quote marks and not styled quote marks from word-processor type documents which I suspect you have in your example code somewhere that I copied. Other than that it’s great, so thanks very much.

I have created a how-to on setting up Ad-Rotator with specific instruction on getting Google’s Ad-Sense working.
You can find the how-to @ http://www.davehildebrand.com/archives/36

@Nigel
You are right. WordPress replaces simple single quotes with styled quote marks which creates problems for anyone doing simple cut-paste from the blog. I have replaced them with double quotes which should work fine with cut-paste.

[...] I won’t go into detail about my search for the plugin. It was neither long nor exciting. I wound up with AdRotator by Angsuman Chakraborty, which was really designed to work with Google AdSense and other prepacked blog advertising tools. But as I read the comments for the plugin’s description, I was assured that it would do what I needed to do. [...]

Thank You! I got it working after only one mistake (a new record for me) and it works beautifully.

I haven’t been able to get the plug-in to work yet, but I’m still working on it. I wanted to ask whether the lines in the .txt file can be like this: or if they need to be html only?
October 11th, 2006 at 9:34 am
i think i have an idea why the google adsense ads don’t show at first even after correct installation. google self says that it takes up to 48 hours before the search robots have scanned your page and by this action enabling AdSense to work. no search robot, no adsense ads. it might be as easy as that. after an afternoon of searching the error, i now will fix myself a cup of tea and wait to see if i’m right
all the best,
chris from sweden

and another reason to slap myself: make sure you don’t have any ad blockers installed in your computer or browser, like i had…

We are working on a professional version of this plugin. Stay tuned.

Just wondering if anyone could tell me which file to add the “” to if you want your ads to be displayed after each post? There are many editable files within Wordpress. Which one do you edit and where in that file do you add to show up after each post?
I tried adding it to the “Main Index” file which is very short. It did work if I added this after the footer info, but if I tried to place it after the post info, it messed up the whole site.
Any help would be great!
Thanks,
Rob

Add it just above the comments section. You can also do it through a plugin. I have one such (unreleased) plugin which does the same for my other blogs like the stem cell research blog.

Hi,
Just above the comments section in which file?
Thanks for responding Angsuman,
