I have been trying to use your rotator script rotating AddSense and other text advertising but AddSense just would not show. I have converted the add code to one liner but it does not come up. Other lines do show up but not the ASense line.
Can you tell me if it does work with AddSense in general or is their code incompatible with this script?
I do not want to cut the code in two parts as you mention in the User mannual, but rather keep it all in the txt file.
Can you please tell me if it does work with AddSense.

Yes. In this blog I use AdRotator to display AdSense ad at the bottom of each post. Just add the line in your template after the post code.

I got the plugin to work correctly. However, I have two ad banners displaying on my blog at the same time: A leaderboard and a wide skyscraper. I’d like to have both of them rotate Google AdSense and Yahoo Publisher Network ads — but displaying 2 AdSense or 2 YPN ads at the same time.
Right now, the Rotator randomizes it so that some of the time, for example, the leaderboard will show an AdSense ad, and the skyscraper shows a YPN ad, on the same page refresh. As I understand it, this violates both networks’ TOS.
Any way to control this?

You may just need to add it to one file in your template. It depends on where you want to show the ad. For example if you want to show it in sidebar then add it to sidebar.php.
If on the main page then add it to index.php etc.

You are misunderstanding. Displaying of pages is determined by the template pages in your theme.
You have to make changes there. Please check the files in your theme and WordPress documentation in codex to understand how it works.
You don’t have to worry about cache for making any changes.

HI I installed this very cool app! thanks! BUT I need somme help.. I am gettinng some wierd characters and not sure from where or why..
I’m on a mAC using text edit saving it a .txt.
files are usually ok when I do that.
I have two ads listed on the text file. So there are only two images. the images have wierd charcters next to them and sometimes when teh page refreshes there is no image and just a long line of gobbledygook text characters.. any idea how to correct this?

Great plugin. I’m experiencing some difficulty though.
I’m trying to use it to rotate a series of Amazon Associate links that use the tag.
I’m using WP 2.2 w/the default them w/widgets enabled. I tried putting the php call inside a text widget in the Sidebar–no effect. I got it to work a bit but the variables inside the link cut off the rest of the widgets that were below it in the sidebar.
So then I put the php call in the bottom of the Sidebar.php theme page, just before the final tag. It worked about 60% of the time but made the rest of the site unstable, esp. in IE (where the reloads were particularly catastrophic).
I’m wondering if it has to do w/the tag unless you have some advice about better placement in the Sidebar.php or a little code to wrap it in. You can access my ad file here.

Hi! I’ve been using AdRotator for some time with no complaints (and much praise!) but now I’ve finally run into a question.
I want to include two different Google Referrer ads– one for Firefox, one for Picasa. I added the script to display the ads in my template, and I have the
line in my .txt file.
I also have my own banner (for my book “Brave Men Run”) in rotation.
The “Brave Men Run” and the Picasa ads rotate no problem… but the Firefox ad doesn’t seem to be in the rotation. Is it not possible to have two different Google programs rotate in the same spot?

I downloaded, installed, and set up AdRotator today. I use it to display random ads on a local Web site, wickenburg-az.com. It does the job nicely, although I did have some trouble piecing together the instructions I needed. I wrote a quick How To article on my personal blog that explains what I did.

I’m trying to use this with AdSense. I’ve read everything on this site. I’ve seen the example.txt file.
I must be missing something. In my template, I have the google code for formatting the text ads. At the end of the format code I call the plugins php function. In my txt file I put the line from google. I’m getting the same ads. No matter how many lines of ads I put. If I remove the script line the urls show up but are not formatted.
Also, how do I get the correct tags for the google ads I want. They are hidden in other sites.

I just wanted to let you know that I resolved this. I turned off my Nortons internet security for spyware and adware and voila wouldn’t you know it appeared! I have only been pursuing this for 6 hours! thanks anyway and I do hope this post helps others.

I read the blog, comments and manual. put it up, turned it on and it worked first time! This was a breeze to put together and I am a code novice. Of course I have a question. I have five banner ads on my site that I need to rotate through so that the top most ad is random. I can load your “code call” five times, but sometimes that ends up with two duplicate ads showing at the same time. People come to my site 2 or three times a week — I want to sell the fact that there ad is always “up” and that the order of ads is random.
Is this possible?

commission junction uses java script for their ads

Great plugin, downloaded and installed it easily on a number of websites.
As all my sites also run wp-cache it does act differently then usual.
In my case the banner is cached for the time wp-cache is caching a particular page (with standard wp-cache settings that is 3600 seconds). No problem there each page loads a different banner and the banners change on reload *after* the cache is reset.

Hi I downloaded your adrotator script to my WP (v2.0.4) blog and I cannot get it to display. I’ve tried it in the header and footer templates, I’ve read thru the manual, looked thru WordPress forums for help and I can’t see what’s wrong. The txt file is created & fine, saved under wp-content with simple banners and their links one per line, the formatting of the div section is fine as I’ve tested that with independent ads. The script is activated in the plugin area, the insertion script is copied directly from your manual with the appropriate file name. But nothing shows and when you view the source of the page, there is no code showing up for your script. The div tag (topads) it sits in is empty. Any ideas on what’s happening here? I’d really like to make use of this script as it sounds perfect for what I’m needing.

Thx for the tips but I have that code in place already as you have indicated. Copied it straight from your manual:
where I have removed appropriate question marks for the php start & end code for this post and topbanner is the txt file I created as per your sample.

OK, sorted it. I think it’s absolutely essential that you make sure everyone understand that you need to use flat text quote marks and not styled quote marks from word-processor type documents which I suspect you have in your example code somewhere that I copied. Other than that it’s great, so thanks very much.

You are right. WordPress replaces simple single quotes with styled quote marks which creates problems for anyone doing simple cut-paste from the blog. I have replaced them with double quotes which should work fine with cut-paste.

i think i have an idea why the google adsense ads don’t show at first even after correct installation. google self says that it takes up to 48 hours before the search robots have scanned your page and by this action enabling AdSense to work. no search robot, no adsense ads. it might be as easy as that. after an afternoon of searching the error, i now will fix myself a cup of tea and wait to see if i’m right

Just wondering if anyone could tell me which file to add the “” to if you want your ads to be displayed after each post? There are many editable files within Wordpress. Which one do you edit and where in that file do you add to show up after each post?
I tried adding it to the “Main Index” file which is very short. It did work if I added this after the footer info, but if I tried to place it after the post info, it messed up the whole site.
Any help would be great!

Add it just above the comments section. You can also do it through a plugin. I have one such (unreleased) plugin which does the same for my other blogs like the stem cell research blog.

Got it to work in an instant with my themes.

I have a question. I’m currently using your ad rotator plugin for two types of ads. One is to rotate a series of leaderboard ads at the bottom of my website, and the other is for skyscraper ads at my sidebar.
I’ve noticed that when I refresh, sometimes one or both of the ads are missing. They just don’t show up. I’m wondering if there’s a minimum number of ads that need to be in the rotation, or else they get skipped over sometimes. I have about 4 or 5 for each ad type.
I’m also wondering if maybe it’s because ad rotator can’t handle certain ads, such as those with Flash or use javascript.
I hope I’ve just overlooked something and it can be fixed right away. Thanks very much.

Hi there,
I’ve been using this tool to great success on http:/www.thestonewailer.com/ for two months.
I use it for ads, but also I use it to rotate in cd reviews, indie musician gig dates, and relevant info related to the site.
What I’m wondering is: is there a way to change the top part of my sidebar, where it talks about Gonzo journalism, to rotate with a mission statement, or other content that I would like to randomly load at the top of the sidebar with each refresh?

The problem I have is that I use Instant Upgrade, that updates WP to the latest version of WP, but do not let you change the files afterwards (apart from the template).
Also, WP 2.2 modifies wp-rss2.php’s structure, so previous mods do not work.
Is there anyway that adrotator could be added to the feeds without editing the wp-rss2.php file ?

Instant Upgrade works great in the blog itself, but if you modify the rss feed files to include it, you have to edit them manually.
And once you use Instant Upgrade, those files (feed-rss2.php in WP 2.2) have apache as the owner. That means that in order to edit them, you have to manually change the owner (chown) to yourself, edit them, and change it again to apache for next time you use Instant Upgrade ….

Not really …. instant upgrade is doing all in the right way …. Adrotator should have an option to be included in the feed without changing the feed php file ….
I know that is possible, “Buy me a beer”, “Socialize” and others do it. They get included in the content of the post and automatically get added to the feed.
Unfortunately I am not able to do it myself …
And don’t get me wrong, I love your plugin, that’s why today I went thru the pain of changing owners and all for another blog …. I rather do all of it that not using it ….
But I am trying to save me some time here ….

Great plug-in! One quick question: For some reason when I link my ads, it is adding my domain in front of the target domain.
So instead of the link being:
http:/www.targetdomain.com/
I am getting this:

I do agree this is a cool plugin but I personally dont recommend people who are new into affiliate marketing to use this.
Reason: You will be disappointed if you spread your gains(profit) into many places. Focus on one. Why not rotate different ads of the same merchant to give you max. impact on sales.

Will the Ad rotator change the order of multiple ads in a side bar column.
The ads are all the same width.
I don’t want one ad displayed with each page loading,
rather I want half a dozen or 8 ads to all dispaly but be in a different order upon each page loading.

I have tried creating a custom Ads Rotator, and have put it on my blog. I have used very primitive techniques, and I do not know if its really effective.

Hi. I like the idea of this plugin, but what I really need is something like a “gallery” of ads (images w/links) that displays in the sidebar based on category. So, for Category A I might have 5 ad images, for Category B I might have 3 ad images, and so on. For pages/posts without categories, or if there is no gallery for a category, I would like a standard Adsense skyscraper. Can this plugin be hacked to accomplish this? Thanks!

Thanks so much for creating this! It works like a charm for the most part, but as several users above have mentioned, it has a minor flaw in that it skips banner loads.
Normally this wouldn’t matter that much, but in my case when it does skip load and leaves a blank space, it screws up the formatting of the header navigation.
Is there any way to keep it from skipping banner loads and leaving a blank space?

First, thank you very much for providing this plugin. It’s really very handy, not just for ads, but also for displaying random images with links.
I am however, having a problem getting it to display in a sidebar. The sidebar is widget enabled and I’m trying to “sneak” in the call to the file via a textbox widget with a header over it. I’m assuming this is not possible?

Great plugin! I have it all set up and working, and I have a quick question. Here’s how my .txt file is set up:
I have 32 lines of code (32 ads). Some of them are duplicates, depending on how much the company has paid. Example: someone who has paid the minimum has one ad in rotation and the number of ads in the rotation increases the more they paid.
My assumption was that the plugin would go through each line in the .txt file (even if in random order) before going through it again. If line 12 was hit, it wouldn’t pull it up again before hitting every other line of code. That doesn’t seem to be the case.
To test, I refreshed the page 58 times. Many ads were displayed more times than shown in the code, and two ads never showed up at all.
The ads that didn’t show up are uploaded and referenced correctly, and there wasn’t a time when nothing was displayed, so it’s not that it’s just not seeing those ads, it’s more like it just never gets to those ads.
Is this the way the plugin is supposed to work?
Again, I love how simple the plugin was to setup, thanks for making it! And thanks for any help!

No. The plugin displays the ads randomly. So while in a small sample size not all ads will show up in your specified frequency, for large sample size (number of hits) the ads will show up in the frequency you have specified. Remember that each line of ad has an equal probability to show up. So to show up an ad more often, specify it more times.

How can I get this to work INSIDE (inline) the body of a Post? (not in the template).

I created one advertisement file.?But it’s not working properly.Only alternate text is displaying while running program.NavigateUrl and ImageUrl are not working.Image is not displaying and when i click on the adrotator it showing sever error 400-Bad request.the same programm when i execting in other web application it’s working.Please help me

This should work with .php extension if I edit your plugins file and change the extension to .php in your code right? If it has a php extension, I can change the path and have the sponsors.php in my theme’s directory, then be able to edit it in wordpress without using an FTP software. All I have to do is modify your code to get it from the template’s path and change txt to php. create a php file with my ads to be rotated in it, and upload it to my current themes folder. then in wordpress’s edit theme section, I could just modify the banners to be rotated… seems like it would work, gonna give it a shot

I can’t make it work…. I installed and activated the plugin, I changed the name of the file to search for in the rotator.php to ‘ad’, I uploaded the ad.txt to the wp-content directory and I added the line of code to the place where I want the ad with the ‘ad’ name too! Hi i have read and re read the instruction and upgraded to wordpress 2.5 I have installed the plugin and activated Uploaded my txt file with the ads in and put the following line into my header file
obviously changing the name and i get the following message :-

getad() should be called in your template and not from the ad file itself. The ad file is just plain html.

I’m still hoping and praying someone will post a hack or update that allows more than 9 Ad Rotator widgets. I can’t think of a reason why it would be limited to 9 and I could use a hundred of them.

Hi, I like your plugin very much. The problem I have is that I don´t want the ads to repeat. For example, I have added 3 times the code to my sidebar to display 3 ads. I then added 5 ads to my ads.txt. I would like to see a random selection of 3 ads without repetitions but sometimes I get the same ad twice or even three times. Is there any way to avoid this?

Great plugin! Thank you. It took me a minute to make it work, but what I did (if it helps anyone) is I pasted the code:
and tried it. That displayed the code, and not the ads. Then I went in and removed the first space between the bracket and the ‘?’ and it made it work.
Hope this helps if anyone gets in a pickle. Thanks for the great plugin!

OK, maybe I am a bit dense, or maybe it is just too late to figure this out, but I can’t seem to figure this out. I am using WP 2.32, no I don’t want to upgrade yet.
Here is what I have done.
1. Uploade plugin to the plugin directory and activated it.
2. Created two text files (ending in .txt) with the ad code inside, both are 160×600. One for Chitika, and one for Linkshare.
3. I uploaded both of thes files to the content directory.
4. Now here is where I get a bit confused. In my sidebar.php file at present I am running an 160×600 “standalone ad”. This is where I would like to have the roating ads appear. Obviuosly I have to delete the “standalone ad” cide first, but is this where I put you pkugin code to call the two ads?
5. If so, what code do I use to call the two ads which are called linkshare-160×600-ad.txt and chitika-160×600-ad.txt
6. You state that I can choose to have one ad show up more than another, something like a 70/30 split. Definitely cant figure that one out. Below you can see a snippet of code from my sidebar.php file where at the moment I am running Chitika ad.
