Ubuntu is slow! Ubuntu é lento!
I hate to say this but after installing Ubuntu on a 1.8 GHz PC with 256 MB RAM, I found it to be slower than Windows 2000. The boot-up sequence takes almost 1.5-2 times longer than Windows 2000. A seqüência de inicialização toma quase 1.5-2 vezes mais longo do que o Windows 2000. In case of power failure, which is not uncommon here, Windows recovers much better (after manadatory chkdsk) than Ubuntu. I had great hopes for Ubuntu but so far I think, either I am missing something big which I doubt or else Ubuntu needs some fine-tuning. I ran Ubuntu (not sure of the version) on a Tekram board, 256MB RAM, AMD K6-2/450 and onboard audio/video without any problems. That was very much true in the past version of windows, even Windows NT. Isso foi muito certo no passado versão do Windows, até mesmo Windows NT. What bothers is is that with every power-cut it forced me to re-install the OS, no less. Ubuntu still blows when it comes to speed - a better debian baised distro is MEPIS - it comes with audio and video fully enables and boots much quicker. Ubuntu ainda sopra quando se trata de velocidade - um melhor distro debian baised é MEPIS - ele vem com áudio e vídeo e botas completamente permite muito mais rápida. It’s slightly more complex - but I find ubuntus overly simplified gnome interface actually makes it harder to find the things i want and tweak my system. All in all, you should just try the latest version (5.10, Breezy Badger) or even better: wait till April and then try out Dapper Drake (6.04). I just wanted to report that as a prior windows 2000 user myself.. Gostaria apenas de um relatório que, como eu próprio usuário antes windows 2000 .. now Xubuntu fanatic in less than 3 days.. Xubuntu torcer agora a menos de 3 dias .. i thought i would chime in and say that i don’t see a reason to ever go back to windows.. Pensei que seria sinal sonoro e em dizer que não vejo uma razão para nunca voltar a janelas .. what good is the speed when i spent half my time fighting windows rot and patching.. o que é bom a velocidade quando passei a minha meia hora combates janelas e podridão patch .. xubuntu has life time support now and the upgrades and updates that improve the performance and add cool new features are almost once a week now.. xubuntu vida tem tempo e agora o apoio upgrades e atualizações que melhoram o desempenho arrefecer e adicionar novas funcionalidades são praticamente uma vez por semana agora .. the nice thing about xubuntu updates is i don’t have to reboot my machine like i did with windows.. xubuntu coisa agradável sobre as atualizações é que eu não ter que reiniciar a minha máquina como eu fiz com janelas ..
i’ve tweaked my system since the basic setup comes made for use as a workstation more than as a desktop and a quick search can show you the same performance tweaks that really boost the overall speed.. I’ve been using Xubuntu for 2 weeks now and really loving it. Eu tenho usado Xubuntu por 2 semanas e agora realmente amando-o. I do have problems playing my ‘mp3′. Eu tenho problemas jogando a minha "mp3". I got the problem solved by using Automatic (www.getautomatix.com). Eu comecei o problema resolvido através da utilização automática (www.getautomatix.com). The only thing abt xubuntu, is that you need to be on the internet often to have it running well. A única coisa abt xubuntu, é que você precisa para estar na Internet muitas vezes têm de se correr bem. And that is really troublesome for people with slower connection. So, im sticking with Xubuntu, even though it is much harder to get my java 6 to run proper here… on to google :). Portanto, im honrando com Xubuntu, embora seja muito mais difícil levar a minha java 6 adequada para correr aqui… sobre a google:).

I’m having the java problem too. Estou tendo o java problema também. I was a bit annoyed/shocked to see how slow even xubuntu runs (6.10) on my amd 1.2 laptop, xp runs faster once properly tweaked (eg services stopped, ballon tips disabled etc etc). Fiquei um pouco chateado / chocado ao ver como é lenta mesmo xubuntu corre (6.10) em 1,2 amd meu laptop, xp corre mais rápido uma vez devidamente otimizadas (por exemplo, parou de serviços, dicas ballon deficientes etc etc). CPU often stays at 100% although, oddly, the system is still responsive and will even clearly play video files when at was at 100% before I even started to play then. CPU muitas vezes permanece em 100%, embora, curiosamente, o sistema ainda é reactivo e ainda vai jogar claramente ficheiros vídeo quando estava em 100%, mesmo antes de eu comecei a jogar em seguida.

I used Ubuntu for several years and it seems to me that the new releases are a lot slower booting and opening programs. Eu usei Ubuntu por vários anos e parece-me que as novas versões são muito mais lentos e de inicialização abertura programas.

I’m running xubuntu 6.10 with xfce as my wm, and it is slow. Estou executando xubuntu 6,10 xfce com as minhas WM, e é lenta. Everything seems slow, like rowing a canoe through a molasses river in the dead of winter. Tudo parece lento, como um remo canoa melaço através de um rio no auge do inverno. Booting takes a long time, applications take a long time to load (Firefox, a simple x text editor, even a terminal, all slow)…my system is a Celeron 900 MHz, with 512 MB of ram…which should be more than adequate for xubuntu….but apparently it’s not. Iniciando demora muito tempo, as aplicações demorar muito tempo para carregar (Firefox, uma simples x editor de texto, um mesmo terminal, todos os lentamente)… meu sistema é um Celeron 900 MHz, com 512 MB de RAM… que deve ser mais que suficiente para xubuntu…. mas aparentemente não é. i’m disappointed overall. Estou decepcionado global. It still looks crummy and patchy and disjointed…the fonts, the windows themselves….everything is still unpolished and patchy-looking. Ele ainda considera crummy e improvisada e incoerente… as fontes, as janelas si…. Unpolished tudo ainda é desigual e de aspecto.

Ubuntu (much faster than Vista) is supposed to be compared in performance with Vista not with XP or win 2000. Ubuntu (muito mais rápido do Vista) é suposto ser comparadas em termos de desempenho com Vista XP ou não a vitória de 2000. You should have tried Xubuntu in your case. Você deve ter tentado Xubuntu no seu caso.

Kubuntu is too slow on 1 gig RAM core 2 duo lappie. Kubuntu é demasiado lento, em 1 giga RAM Core 2 Duo lappie. Compared with Vista that flies. Em comparação com Vista que voa. Mouse irresponsible. Dude ubuntu sucks reason is because the kernel includes like everything. Dude ubuntu sucks razão é porque o kernel inclui como tudo. Re-compile kernel, and mess with init scripts and i bet it will speed up. Re-compilação do kernel, e bagunça com scripts init i e aposta que irá acelerar. I would suggest going with a distro like gentoo or if your not that good with linux yet i would suggest debian over ubuntu. Gostaria de sugerir que vão a uma distro como gentoo ou se o seu bom que não com o linux ainda gostaria de sugerir ao longo do debian ubuntu. Plus you wont deal with as many noob know it alls with those distros vs ubuntu (this is personal opinion). I was happily running windows 2000 on P4 2.0ghz and 256MB Ram. Eu estava feliz rodando Windows 2000 em P4 2.0ghz e 256MB RAM.
3 weeks back thought about trying the Ubuntu 8.04(Gnome) and now googling with various keywords for why ubuntu is slow. 3 semanas de volta pensou em tentar o Ubuntu 8.04 (Gnome), e agora googling com várias palavras-chave para porquê Ubuntu é lento. I have 2 options either to buy new hardware just to run ubuntu or reinstall win2k. Tenho 2 opções tanto para comprar novos equipamentos apenas para rodar ubuntu ou reinstalar win2k.
I am going with windows. Estou indo com janelas. Last 3 weeks, I was spending all my time in googling and setting up the ubuntu instead of doing my actual work. Última 3 semanas, eu estava gastando todo o meu tempo em googling e cria o ubuntu em vez de fazer o meu trabalho efectivo.
I couldn´t open more than 2-3 windows otherwise I need to reboot the system as it is keep hanging. Eu não poderia abrir mais do que 2-3 janelas outra me necessário reiniciar o sistema mantenha como está pendurado.
UBUNTU SUCKS! Ubuntu SUCKS! IMO. (have read 100s of articles on why linux is better than windows :-)) (li 100s de artigos sobre o motivo pelo qual o linux é melhor do windows :-))

Ganesh, I don’t think “Ubuntu Sucks!” is a fair statement to make. Ganesh, não creio "Ubuntu Sucks!" É uma justa declaração a fazer.
Having said that, I too am not happy with Ubuntu so far. Tendo dito isto, eu também não estou satisfeito com o Ubuntu até agora. I installed Ubuntu on two P4 machines, one with 512Mb RAM and the other 256Mb. Eu Ubuntu instalado em duas máquinas P4, 512MB RAM e uma com a outra 256Mb. The 512Mb machine is doing OK, but the 256Mb machine is facing all sorts of problems. A máquina está fazendo 512MB OK, mas o 256Mb máquina está a enfrentar todos os tipos de problemas. It was running Windows XP alright before that, mind you. Foi com o Windows XP alright antes disso, você mente. To start, I can’t install Ubuntu from the Live CD, had to use the alternative CD. From what I’ve seen Ubuntu is a pretty well put together piece of software, it does have a few bugs. Desde que eu tenha visto Ubuntu é muito bem juntos uma peça de software, ele possui alguns bugs. (but what doesn’t?) In my experience the start up is rather fast (about 40s after I push the ‘power’ button it’s ready to go) (mas que não?) Na minha experiência, o arranque é bastante rápido (cerca de 40 anos depois de eu empurrar o "poder" botão ela está pronta para ir)
btw go for the latest version of Ubuntu because it would obviously have some bugs worked out. btw ir para a última versão do Ubuntu, porque obviamente têm alguns bugs desenvolvida.
