Sunset and Fate of Java vƂ̉^W
Sun Microsystem (SUNW) is down in many sense of the word.T}CNVXei sunw j_EÄӖł̌tłB The billion dollar question is whether it can come back again.ĥǂ̎͗Ԃ邱Ƃł܂B
Sun's strength was in innovation.z̋́AZpvVłB After the first big innovation, Sun rapidly became way too bureaucratic and less innovative.̍ŏ̑傫ȋZpvV́Az܂ɂ}ɊvVIȊƏȂłB Java was innovative but I think it was designed in vacuum, without considering viable revenue models.ẂAvVIȂAƎvƂ́A^vAL]Ȏvfl܂B
Sun had (has?) high markup on its products which was good so long Intel chips were far behind Sun.źi͂łH j̃}[NAbvАiɂ́ACẽ`bvǂ̂ŒđẑłB It was more focused in meeting the revenue goals without reacting rapidly to market dynamics.͑̉c𒆐SɎvڕWsɋ}ɔ͊włB
A company like Apple (during Job's era) innovates continuously to stay ahead.Abv̂悤ȉЂŁiɎd̎jvVpIɂ؍ݐցB So does Oracle which also does a great job of focusing on its core competency.̓INɂ傫Ȏd͂̒jƂȂ\͂ɏœ_ĂĂ܂B Sun's core competency is in Solaris and Sparc.z̒jƂȂ\͂́A SolarisSPARĈłB It decided, without strong logical underpinnings, to open source Solaris, thereby drastically reducing its net value.Ƃ߂AƋ͂Ș_IՂI[v\[XSolaris̏ꍇA啝ɍ팸ƃlbglłB
So what are the legs on which Sun can rise again?͉łȑőz͍Ăя㏸łH I can't see many.̑QƂ邱Ƃ͂ł܂B Can you?ƂłH
The key question to me is the fate of Java with slow but almost sure demise of Sun.̌́AW̉^Ƃz̕قڊmłB I don't think open source foundations can effectively manage and improve on this great product.I[v\[X̊ՂƂ͎vȂコ邱ƂʓIɊǗÄ̑ȐiłB And I wouldn't trust it with IBM or Oracle either.M邱Ƃ͂ȂƎɂ́A IBM܂Oraclêǂ炩łB Microsoft is out of question.}CN\tgł́AAEg̎łB
The other option is breaking Javasoft from Sun and making it self-sufficient with consultancy and java software services. javasoftÃIvV́AzƔj邱ƂɃRT^gJava\tgEFAT[rXłB

No offense, but thatfs kind of scam.C͂ȂÂ悤ȍ\̂łB End of 2002 SUNW was about $3, now it is $4.30. 2002N̏Isunw͖$ 3 Ał$ 4.30łB So who is down ? who_E߂łH And by the way Angsuman, aare you aware of Sun commercial JVM ?ƂłAngsuman AA[mđz̏JVM̂łH

scam?\łH Thatfsa strange use of word.͕svcȒPgp܂B I donft benefit from Sun going down.z̉b鎄͉Ă܂B I own stocks of Sun.g̊̑złB However we have to face reality.͌ɒʂB I have told exactly as I see it.͎̌Ƃł͂܂łB
Moving from $3 to $4.30 may seem big to you. $ 4.30$ 3ړ悤Ɏv邩܂rbO܂B IMHO it doesnft matter unless it breaks at least 5$, at which point institutional investors can begin investing again. imhoĂĂ\܂ĂȂAȂƂ5 $ A̎_̋@֓Ƃ̓Jn܂B
