Not only they are an irritating visual distraction (in most cases), they also consume way too much CPU. I often leave my computer open for days and then things start really slowing down until I restart my browser. Now there is a neat dedicated solution to this pain - Flash Block.

Flash Block is a simple focussed extension for Mozilla, Firefox and Netscape browsers to remove Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Shockwave and Macromedia Authorware content types from displaying. It instead displays a simple button which allows you to selectively display these contents, if so desired.
