The rumor mills in the tech and media circuits are buzzing with the news that this week the New York Fashion Week might see the launch a new phone: Palm Inc.'s second WebOS smart phone. This new phone reportedly has been named Pixie.
The operating system of Pixie would remain same as that of its precursor, Palm Pre, as per certain reports released in April this year. In spite of operating on the same system from Sprint Nextel Corp., the price of Palm Pixie is much less than that of Palm Pre. Earlier, in April, it was estimated that Palm Pixie would cost somewhere around $349. But now where Palm Pre is sold at $200 after a discount of $100, Palm Pixie is priced at just $99.
Pixie's exclusive features include 2.63 inches of display which has a resolution of 320 x 400. The 3 megapixel camera of Pre has been replaced by the 2 megapixel one in Pixie. It will also be incorporated with an accelerometer and GPS, minus the WiFi. All these scaled down changes might have been made to decrease the price. Apart from these features there are other features like a proper QWERTY keyboard, 8GB of internal memory of which approximately 7GB is available and also a bluetooth.
As TechCrunch reports, Palm Pixie's launch is timed very peculiarly with Apples big event on the iPod's touch screen features and also the launch of the 3G iPhones. It is to be seen how much people are interested in Palm's new cheaper model. If it can hold the interest of people in this rush for iPods and iPhones then it is surely here to stay.
