Orkut: Google’s venture in Social Networking

June 20th, 2006 A new Internet worm capable of stealing bank details and other personal data from users is circulating via Orkut, Google's social networking service, FaceTime Communications, Instant-messaging service provider, warned on Monday. FaceTime said its software security lab had detected the spread of the electronic virus, the third such threat to disseminate itself via messages posted on Orkut users' personal Web pages.

July 24th, 2005 Brazilian police arrested 10 people on Thursday accused of selling drugs using Google's international social networking site Orkut, which is hugely popular in the Latin American country. "We discovered the drug ring first via authorized phone tapping, and later the investigation included monitoring of their activities on the Internet," said a duty officer at the Drugs Enforcement Service in the city of Niteroi, just across the bay from Rio de Janeiro.

April 15th, 2009 The success of Orkut has been quite centralized within India, Brazil etc and most importantly, very unlike Google, it has never come out of its limitations. However, this may just be the start when Google takes things seriously with this massively popular social networking site used by millions of people, as Google starts its Google Latitude service (that lets you see your friends' locations and status messages and share yours with them.) in orkut.
