My computer’s been bugging me to install the WGA notification. Any way to stop the little exclamation shield from appearing in the system tray? Thanks!
July 20th, 2006 at 8:14 am
Thanks so much for this simple, straightforward method to stop the daily checks and the awful warning that my copy of win xp was not genuine: my copy of win xp was completely legitimate, paid for by me through a discount provided by my university (i am a faculty member); my hard drive crashed, was replaced, and win xp was reloaded from the same disk. WGA flags it as a pirated copy…my University IT explains that they have a multi-use license, meaning that each Winxp disk can be loaded on more than one computer (about 5 times). It makes me crazy to think that WGA flags it as illigitimate. Bravo to this site and it’s author

What an absolute flawless, fluent, and quick ‘fix’ to my headache from MS. I let ‘them’ do all the magic/auto updates post hardrive ‘crash’, to the used replacement unit….boy was THAT a mistake! All is ‘normal’ now….THANKS A MILLION!!!! for your ‘magic’!
July 30th, 2006 at 6:24 am
Finally! Somebody sees it my way! MS Genuine Validation?! A more fitting title for this insidious peice of malware should be “MS Genuine SPYWARE”!! This is why SO MANY people do NOT trust MS! C’mon MS, STOP SPYING ON and MISTRUSTING your customers!
July 31st, 2006 at 6:40 am
After removing WGA, M$ will still nag you about re-installing WGA when WinXP phones home to check for automatic “updates.” The best way to stop this harassment is to set your firewall to block all traffic to/from M$.
August 6th, 2006 at 2:24 pm
WGA did not install on my laptop because I do not allow auto updating. When I checked this “update” out before I downloaded it, I was so disgusted that I downloaded a copy of Xandros instead, and now I run that rather than XP. How can Microsoft expect to get away with treating it’s customers like that?

I went to this site so I can download the WGA removal tool, unfortunately it wasn’t available anymore because of Microsoft (no doubt)
Fortunately for me, I installed the plugin in Mozilla Firefox (my default web browser) ^_^ and I was able to delete the plugin file from the plugins folder (very straightforward eh?) I checked if it worked, so I went back to microsoft.com and tried to download, and they told me to install/download the wga plugin again ^_^ YEY FOR ME! By the way, before deleting the file, when I went to ms.com (using firefox) they told me that my copy of windows isn’t genuine, and now they don’t tell me coz wga is gone! =D and when I went to ms.com using ie, they also asked me to install the wga, since the plugin was installed for mozilla, and not for ie. Thank goodness for Mozilla Firefox ^_^

MycrowSoft “Slick Willy” think that everyone out there are stupid. WGA is NOT the only spying tool that he uses, why does his O/S have so many *.dbx etc files hidden in so many strange and hard to find places and why does “Slick Willy” mark these files with +(S)ecret switch (NOT System) so that even if you tell the O/S to show All files it does not! Why is everybody’s privacy (ie every move) so important to him that he hides your movements on your own computer with a Secret switch ? The World should ACT against this INTRUDER! Maybe Boycot ?

Obviously the removal tool has been removed, but….
Google “wayback machine” (internet archive) and type in the old url for the link:
http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tools/RemoveWGA.exe
You have to go back to around 2006, but it’s still there and downloadable!

I tried your instructions for removing wga. Just a warning for others who may not be able to fix any problems that occur. Could not connect to internet after following the instructions, firewall would not operate, and antivirus would not work. Had to restore to a previous point ( before wga was installed), but wga was there when restore took affect. Had to re-install antivirus and firewall. Too scary for some, and I still have wga.
