The VMWare Server is available for free download. However it requires a serial number. Unfortunately the serial number is hard to find. Fortunately it is free. After much searching I found that you can get it from here.

I have just installed Xubuntu on Windows 2000 box. It is rather slow so I am not sure how useful it will be for deployment purposes.
However it will be a good tool for testing.
