June 20th, 2007 at 4:45 am
whoa! cool! thanks a lot. DID anyone experience that their computer slowed down after the occurence of WGA? Perhaps that WGA is the reason of the slow down? Can anyone tell me a fix for that? I don’t think my computer was slow before i had WGA. my PC has 1GB of RAM, 2.66 Ghz, i think… But whenever i play music then, say, open firefox or MSword, the music still plays but it slows. As in the voice of the singer/song slows, starts to sound like its in slow motion.
TIPS please, would be very greatful. Thanks.

Hmm switching to Linux to have more problems than a simple annoying “Your Windows is not genuine” notification? No thanks, I do want my hardware to still be recognised by my Operating System
August 31st, 2007 at 6:50 am
Saludos…

Hi, looks like MS has very much changed how WGA works - just installed WinXP Pro SP2 on Dec 2, 2007, installed all updates (including WGA), followed the 3 steps, but no Reg entries or referenced files found! I searched for WGA and found different info, disabled it, and no more encrypted checks back to MS.
I\’m not strong enough with Win to give a write-up so perhaps someone who knows the correct way to disable the new method will follow-up - thx.

To get rid of the of the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification do the the following:
FIRST AND FORMOST CREATE A RESTORE POINT:
Start=>Run. type msconfig. go to the general tab
and click on launch system restore. click on create a restore point and than next. give any name and click restore. close all windows by clicking ok and reboot your machine.
1. control panel=>add/remove program and find the line
“Windows Genuine Advantage validation tool (kb892130). this is the key to find the solution.
2. go to c:/windows/ and find the file kb892130.log
3. open that log and read the lines. you will find the lines which contain the main folder and other files which you want to eliminate.
4. The name of the main folder is SoftwareDistribution which exist in c:/windows and in c:/windows/system32
5. Bootup your machine in safe mode and rename these folders.
6. click on Start=>Run and type regedit
7. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE => SOFTWARE and find the folder Windows Genuine Advantage or SoftwareDistribution or WGA
if you cant find it open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE => SOFTWARE => WINDOWS
8. delete the file. BE CAREFUL NOT TO DELETE OTHER FOLDERS.
9. reboot your machine and you should be fine.
10. if something goes wrong go to Start=>Run. type msconfig. go to the general tab
and click on launch system restore. click on “restore my computer to an earlier time”.
find the restore point that you created and restore your compuer. reboot your machine

I’ve just freshly installed WINXP, and got updates enabled, so of course had to download the WGA notification tool but had not installed the tool. It would popup & ask to install on every reboot, & I would of course close it out, but still got my updates downloaded and installed. So far, those have included DOTNET 3.5, IE 8, & Service Pack 3. I didn’t want to be bothered by this notification any longer, so I booted into safe mode, navigated to C:/WINDOWS/system32/KB905474 & simply renamed the “wganotifypackageinner.exe” & “wgasetup.exe” & rebotted…so far it has not bothered me!

Any other suggestions?

I’d sure like to get LINUX running. However, I’ve found getting it to load is a formidable task. The 300 page install guideline via fedora 12 is so complex and bounces around way too much. What we need is a straight forward load instruction to deploy your CD and hard drive. The manual seems like it has 100 different ways to load LINUX, most of those options don’t apply to the home / small business user.
