Hacking MySpace AfterMath: Code, Explanations and Prevention

Recently Samy [samy at namb dot la] released a worm ["Samy worm" or "JS.Spacehero worm"] in MySpace, popular social networking platform like Friendster, which caused him to be added as hero to millions of MySpace users (”but most of all, samy is my hero.”) as well as add him as their friend, all without their explicit permission.
After flooding the Network, MySpace stepped in and fixed the hole. Samy is still “hero” to millions of MySpace users in their profile.
The purpose of this article is to highlight the security issues exposed by this worm. It is definitely not limited to MySpace alone and the worm propagated not due to MySpace’s fault but fault of browser like Internet Explorer. And the flaw is waiting to be exploited in several other web applications of similar nature like Ryze or LinkedIn etc.. In the remainder of this article I will summarize the modus-operandi of his script and suggest on ways to protect your web application against such attacks.
Samy used AJAX to add himself as a friend and hero when users visited his page. This requires Javascript to be executed in the browser which does the dirty work.
MySpace dutifully eliminates javascript from users html (which becomes their profile). However Sammy disguised the word javascript with an embedded newline - “java\nscript”.
MySpace doesn’t allow script tags. So he embedded his javascript in CSS - style=”background:url(’javascript:eval(document.all.mycode.expr)’)”
AJAX can fetch documents from the same domain (or sub-domain) only. So if the user was on profile.myspace.com, he moved them to www.myspace.com which provides the same information but allows him to be added as a friend.

After overcoming a trvial hash issue he adds his code and “but most of all, samy is my hero.” text to users profile. This causes the worm to propagate not only when users visit his site but also when they visit any of the infected users. Yes, simple exponential spreading.
Samy provides detailed notes and code for his exploit after the exploit was filtered / stopped by MySpace.
How can you protect your web application from such attacks?
First and foremost I assume you have filtering in place like MySpace did filtering scripts and javascript tags etc. However obviously that is not enough; not even close.
Your filtering tags should be intelligent to recognize words separated by newlines as shown above.
Other users profile (or any html content) should be viewable only from a separate sub-domain.
Any actions like adding a link, friend, connection etc. must be done from pages which can never contains any other users code. If you provide a link while viewing others profile to add his as a friend then on clicking you take him to a separate page where the users gets to edit information about his friend and add him after confirmation. This page should not contain any html content from the user being added.
In essence we need to captalize on AJAX security model which prevents code execution from different site.

How to hack myspace passwords! It is possible and it is easy. This way of hacking into Myspace accounts was brought to my attention by a ex-girlfriend of mine who is a bit of a computer wizard. I have tried the method a least a dozen times and it has worked on all but 2 occasions, I don’t know the reason why it failed a couple of times, but on every other occasion it has got me the password for the requested Myspace address. This is how it is done:

I’m certian the writer of this post has created the /myspaceserveer4you account in order to get the passwords of anyone who writes to him. Think about it - you’re giving YOUR email and password when following these steps!

its bullshit, the “Server page” is just some random persons myspace account with a name that might sound like its be controled by myspace. it isnt, its some dink trying to harvet peoples passwords.
1) Its not a “different server” if it was they would be using something like server.myspace.com. the name myspace.com/myspaceserver4you looks just like yours and everyone elses myspace page.
2) the link you click on to their page is just an “email this user” link, same as any other page.
3) type in your own password? O AND your own email address. With that information the person can login with your account. the system KNOWS your email address all ready, because your logged in.
4) If you look up near the top you can see a banner trying to cover up the nav to the other parts of the site. Why would myspace do that.
5) the email will be sent in a day? It takes a few seconds for a “forgot your password” email to get sent, they expect you to wait a day because thats how long it will take for them to login to your account and change your password.
GO ahead try it, your a fucking idiot if you do, and should lose your myspace account because of it.

To hack your friend it is simple. I have never done this but i know it will work.
Use the email site: fmail or fastmail
i do not remmember the site but w/e.
Just find any email system/site taht will let you change what the FROM section looks like to the reciever. Then request YOUR password from myspace and copy and paste ALL of the text from it and then paste it into UR email to ur friend. Then find a site that lets you to HTML editing. Make your site look like the requested friend’s site. However make it have an extra page taht says: For extra security please login. You need to change the login spot so that the info gets sent to your email INSTED of the myspace server. Then once ur all done with this editing and script writing which shudnt be that hard, send it to ur friends email taht he uses for his myspace. Now if he or she falls for it u now have the password. Before u send it try it out ot make sure it works.
I reccomend not doing this becuz it is illegal! I am not responsible for what you do with these steps of getting a password and have nothing to do with you.

Is there any other way to stop playgerism? Cuz this one person(criminal) to0k another person’z (victom) layoutz and place it on there own page, knowing that it was custom made and not free for the public to use. You can contact the offender. If that doesn’t prove fruitful then you can contact his hosting provider and complain with full details. A filled out DMCA form along with your complaint normally does the trick and the offender is booted from the server in most cases. You final options are respectively:
1. sending a laywers notice
2. take him to small claims court

My two cents…
I will not provide a step-by-step how-to of hacking MySpace. This post contains detailed information of a hacking that was done in the past using Javascript, after the breach was sealed. The thrust of the post was how can you protect your web application from such attacks.
I personally do not encourage nor condone hacking. I don’t think hacking MySpace (or any other system) is the right way to take revenge on someone.
BTW: Don’t give out your email & password to anyone purporting to hack MySpace for you. They are fraudsters.

I nhave a buddy I just got off the phone with about this very problem. I had called him earlier because I was sent a myspace message from him (when at that point I thought was a fake trying to copy his site) saying he lost his account and myspace couldnt do anything, and to add him…..I called the real guy about it and he said that his site did get broken into and changed. We have the new email address of the person, which is also a gmail account. (being that gmail is invite only would that help us figure out who?) He has spoken with myspace about it and they so far have not been able to help him. I know this guy has used adderrobot to get more friends and probably has a tracker. Could that be a part of the problem? What are his options if any on getting his account back? Again, we have the new email login, but thats it.

There isn’t much option really. You can try guessing the password. You can also try contacing MySpace support about it and explain the situation.
Chances are they will ask you to create a new account.
Personally I think the best option is to create a new account and forget about the old one.

I need help. I know someone that is a liar. Big time! Well, now he has created a new account acting like someone else, that person is just sticking up for him and cussing and all kinds of uncalled things. He claims that is not him, but He knows the person. I still think he is lying. The whole situation is very sad and harmful to everyone around. His wife is now taking him back and believes that person was not him, but I know it was. But have no proof. People are quite hilarious. My friend hacked my account and then changed my password. I am sure your 15 year old friend can hack into a networking site. I am sure you were probably an idiot and let them get your email and password. Your ex’s aren’t hacking your account. Hacking would require using some kind of a a Javascript Command or Mysql injections which I doubt anyone on here that asks for help even knows about. Stop asking people to hack your site or someone you know. Get a life. If you have so much time on the internet then go get a book on these applications and learn how to do it yourself.

The blog was about a beautiful young man who wrote me, that I traced and determined was a 49 year old lesbian convicted of staging hate crimes….against herself. No…I am not kidding. It was quite a story, and got an amazing response. Read the comments from all of the women she duped. Turned out she was also trolling for 15 year old girls.
Sorry for the long explanation. In any case, after I posted, she immediately hacked my page and blocked my myspace mail. I can receive mail, but am blocked from sending any out.
Is there a way to undo this? Myspace is not even acknowledging my requests for help. I believe that some of you may be familiar with hacks and could perhaps tell me how to unhack my page. Knowing this would also help if she tries it again.
If you do know how to do this, and can tell me, I would be very grateful.
I’d just like to go back to my regular myspace life of jewelry, art and literature…lol…

Don’t you people think that “hackers” have their own problems? I am so sick of receiving “anguished cr[ies] for help” from people who put far too much of their lives into social networking. If you really want to find out if your husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend/family pet/left hand is cheating on you, you could always tie them to a chair then start asking questions and breaking fingers. If that is too much for you, why not try asking them? I gaurantee you have a better chance of finding out what they are doing that way instead of perstering a complete stranger (which is probably who you are being cheated on with) with your melodramatic and dysfunctional personal life. If you really think that hacking is the only way to solve your problems, then I suggest you learn how computers and the internet actually work. God knows that you spend enough time online, you might actually be able to accomplish something on your own. Rant Over.

Me and my girl got myspace together, well we wrote down the password while I was home on leave. The email address that we put down, she deleted, not thinking it was a big deal because we do not use it anymore. Well while I was on my way back here to Iraq she lost the password. Now we can not get into the myspace account. Why it is important for me and her is I have some pictures also video’s on there that I do not have saved my labtop and really do not want them to be lost… I would just get them off the website if it wasn’t set to private. So my question is, can you help me access the site, so I can change the password and give her the new one also allowing me to get the pictures off of it. Thanks.

I need some major help wit myspace…first of all i need to know how i can change my email address from myspace when u already deleted your old email adress…the email account i used for my myspace no longer exist exsists so i cannot get a confirmation code wha do i do???

hey i want to do the same thing that carlos does excpt this is my daughter I told her not to get a Myspace but my son who lives with his Dad showed me her myspace i confronted her about this but sh said she doesnt have one.
I know her email address bu tnot the password.
