Free Forum Software (PHP, MySQL); Alternative to phpBB
Angsuman Chakraborty
February 21st, 2006
I stumbled upon Simple Machines Forum, from Simple Machines, which appears to be an excellent software and competitor to phpBB forum software which I use.
It supports hierarchical representation of categories unlike phpBB. Overall it gave me a good impression looking from the website.
Is there anyone with personal experience in both phpBB and SMF? Can you please comment on your comparative experience?

I have not used SMF, but it does seem to have a very large and dedicated cult following (similar to WordPress when it first started out). I have been looking into using PunBB for a small project that I am conducting on the side, but I am considering the use of SMF instead.

I don’t have extensive experience with phpBB - I’ve been only a user of it. In the past, I’ve managed a site using Invision Power Board, then migrated to SMF. SMF works extremely well for the small community site I run.

James,
Thanks for the information.
Thanks Sylf.
Babar & Kabir,
phpBB is a forum software. Check my animax forum for an example.
All,
I will soon provide more information on phpBB & SMF.

The first forum i ever set up was a IPB one, i then changed to PHPBB because i was not getting the support needed from IPB, since then however and because of various problems, i switched again to SMF this forum is excellent and easy to use i have NEVER looked back and have not had any problems with it in the 1 and a half years that it has now been running!!
In my book SMF is the BEST

You should look at :

which will help you to make your choice, by reviewing these two forums, and comparing their features.

Hi, this looks like afun forum.
It was recommended to me by a friend (I’m not going to say who), but I think I’m going to enjoy my stay (at least until I find something else to occupy my time)

Hello.
Nice forum design. Okay, I need your advice.
So, I wanna make online-store, and I am looking for site template.
Can you suggest some online place or other resource where I can find many site templates?
It would be better if it will be free:)
I think many of us have personal sites, do you design it yourself?
Thanks a lot, Bill.

In comparision of the “brands” SMF wins definitely. phpBB proven it’s bad when so many users can not be controlled in their development.
I would also recommend to take a look at miniBB - http://www.minibb.net. It’s also often called “an alternative to phpBB”, I don’t see it’s overloaded with the features like phpBB or SMF or vBulletin for example, but it could fit any small-to-medium site perfectly.
