Can Translator Plugin Pro get your site unindexed in search engines or invoke any kind of penalty? No. It is an outright lie, a nasty rumour which is being spread by one of our competitors.
This site (Simple Thoughts) is using Translator Plugin since 2004. It is highly ranked by Google and other search engines. We served 1686914 pages last month (443943 visits). Majority of our traffic is from search engines, like most popular sites worldwide. We are heavily indexed by all major search engines and we have been using Translator Plugin since 2004. The translated pages are indexed like any other pages on this site.
Let's take another example. My Anaconda site has been recently started using Translator Plugin Pro. Look at the number of pages indexed by Google, MSN and other search engines:
- Pages indexed by Google - shows 130 pages
- Pages indexed by MSN - shows 106 pages
- Pages indexed by Yahoo - shows 19 pages
As you can see the number of pages indexed is much larger than the actual number of pages in the site, check for yourself.
And all of the increase is by making your site available in other languages. You could have done it manually like Gizmodo or CNet, which would be economically unfeasible for most bloggers. Or you can use automatic machine translation to do the job for you.
Also you will notice that the translated pages are displayed in the indexes of all search engines.

Why your site cannot be unindexed or penalized for using Translator Plugin Pro?
Translator Plugin Pro generates translated pages which are in every way identical to any other pages of your site (for example: http://anaconda.taragana.net/de/ is the translated version of the home page in german).
Translated pages are generated based on your original content and nothing else. You are providing a valid service to wider internet community. You have no logical reason to be afraid of.

In case you are afraid of using Google's translation engine, you can anytime switch to using Babelfish. More translation engines are being added in 4.0 (free upgrade). Any other concerns?
I would conclude this section by reasoning from another webmaster in digitalpoint forum:
1. Google isn't THAT clever to work out it's a 1:1 translation.
2. A translation is never 1:1 anyway, ask two experts to translate the same text into the same language and they won't type the same.
3. Duplicate content penalty is to avoid needless duplicates. A translation serves a very good purpose so it would be VERY wrong if they did penalize it.

Hi Angsuman,
First of all, I am very pleased to “meet” the person who created the translator plugin that I use on my site, Small Business Trends. I had seen the plugin on another site and when I moved to WordPress from Blogger, the plugin was at the top of my list of features for my Web designer to implement.
The translator has worked out very very well so far. It gets regular use on my site (5% of pageviews) and several visitors have remarked positively. I have gotten two comments that suggest the machine translation is not up to snuff, but in both cases they were from translators who were offering their services to me.
Much as I would love to have a professionally and manually translated site, there is no way I could afford to get the site translated into 8 languages. Your translator plugin is the only feasible solution, and I am glad to have it.
I have seen absolutely no evidence of any search engine penalty. My site seems to be well-indexed and well-ranked by many different measures, considering that it is a niche-topic business site.
Also, essentially I started from scratch 10 months ago with my site. Virtually all the links and indexed pages have been developed in those 10 months, and the translator plugin has been working during that entire time. (Prior to then my blog was a blogspot-hosted blog, so none of my earlier links transferred over upon the switch to WordPress, unfortunately.) My site would seem to be a good test case, given these circumstances.
When it comes to duplication penalties, I am far more concerned about spam sites and spoof sites that steal my content and use it. I am not concerned about the translator plugin.
Thank you for making this plugin available. I really appreciate it and I plan to continue using it. I would be happy to give a testimonial, as my way of saying “thank you.”

As you may recall from the discussion in the wp-hackers list when I initially released the Semiologic Pro Package, I checked for license issues when bundling 3rd party components.
Regarding your plugin in particular, and I cannot remember reading anything on your site that was a show stopper. When I tried to contact you to make sure there were no issues, your site had no phone or email address, and your comment form was not working due to a buggy spam protection scheme on your site. When I sent a message via the (at the time) form on taragana.com, noone bothered answering me.
Regarding the question raised in my forum about Google potentially banning sites using their transation web service to serve more pages, it was not my question but a prospect’s. In the event f there was any issue at all, I figured raising it in public would make more sense than secrecy. Your initial input (i.e. translator Pro has no issue, a link to buy it) was constructive and welcome.
Your plugin, which directs users to your site, will be removed per your request, since you’re making a big issue of a misunderstanding that unnoteworthy at best. It will be replaced by a plugin that is free, and GPL-licensed.
Last but not least, your flaming me in public was unprofessional at best. It would have been sweet of yours to contact me and wait for an answer before posting junk like this on your web site. As an aside, notice that I’m answering in my forum and on your site, rather than flaming you on the front page of a blog. I’ll be looking forward to reading a follow-up or an edit to your post in the lights of the above.
