FireFox 2.0 Beta 1 Key New FeaturesJuly 13th, 2006 The key new features of Firefox 2.0 beta (with brief commentary) are:
Integrated spell-checker - no more excuse for poor spelling in form data
Bookmarked web site summary - small updated headlines that sites can create that display in the bookmark sidebar in Firefox
Crashed session recovery - finally I can replace tab browser extension
Re-open recently closed tabs - this one is a life-saver
Anti-phishing warning popup - I hate popups but will let this one slide.
Search suggestion - live dropdown of suggested terms while searching
Tab close button on tabs - Personally I like ctrl-w better, a close button on every tab just makes it more crowded, not convenient
RSS feed preview - provides information on an RSS feed when the user is subscribing to it
You can download and test it here.

I use TabMix .2 and I don’t have the slowdown or hanging problems. In fact, TabMix is one of the extensions I recommend most!
How fast is your computer? I’m using an Athlon 64 3400+ so maybe it is actually using a lot of CPU power, and I’m just not aware of it. On the other hand, I often have so many tabs open that it takes a while to scroll through them all to find the one I’m looking for. So, if it caused a geometrically proportional slowdown compared to the number of opened tabs, I surely would have seen something.
May 19th, 2005 at 3:10 pm
TabMix is fine with 5-7 tabs. The time increases in
geometric proportion (with low coefficient; in other words more than arithmetic progression) to the number of tabs in use. With 25-30 tabs it becomes very much unusable, peaking the machine to 95% CPU and above for significant periods of time and hangs the machine for a minute or more! The problem increases when you check certain options like switching to the last tab after closing a tab etc.
I have a 1800 Ghz Intel Pentium 4 with 256MB RAM.

How does your machine perform when you have 25-30 separete firefox windows open?
May 25th, 2005 at 1:48 am
@pinthenet
At this moment I have 33 tabs open in Firefox 1.04. The browser and the machine are running super-fast with 2% CPU usage only. The problem is, without any shade of doubt, with TabMix 0.2 extension.
May 26th, 2005 at 4:56 pm
Nope, it isn’t. I’m using Tabmix .2 right now and I don’t have that problem anymore. I remember having it earlier on though, but then I removed another extension and the hangups went away. Can’t remember which one however… can you list your extensions here? (there’s an extension called InfoLister that does the job if you have lots of em)
May 26th, 2005 at 6:53 pm
@BranStorm
I do use a lot of extensions. However I do not have any performance problems after I removed TabMix .2.
My extensions are:
Dictionary Search
SessionSaver .2
Super DragAndGo
cuneAform
Document Map 0.4
PRGoogleBat
UserAgentSwitcher
GreaseMonkey
ImageZoomer
PermitCookies
Clone Window
SEOpen
ieview
Live HTTP Headers 0.10
ColorZilla 0.82
SpellBound 0.73
Let me know if you find any of the above suspicious.
One thing which came to my mind is whether SessionSaver is interacting with TabMix to degrade the performance.

I use TabMix and 33 other extentions without any problems. I can open any number of tabs without delays or high CPU usage. At one point I remember having problems and did a clean install of Firefox and then extensions. I began with Tabmix as I consider it indispensible and added one at a time to look for problems. It worked for me and could help others.

I experienced slowdowns an my fast computer just yesterday. I pinned it down to Grease Monkey…the page loading was fast again as soon as I had uninstalled it…
Maybe the processing overhead for Grease Monkey is too high if you have dozens of tabs open.
Maybe Tabmix just adds that little bit of waiting for you to get annoyed…
Try uninstalling Grease Monkey and see if it changes things…you can always reinstalll it later.

@nobbsch
I do not use GreaseMonkey anymore after the security scare. I have started using TabMix Plus without any problems and with several tabs open as always.

My CPU usage becomes high when Firefox opens a new window via javascript, and when I first open Firefox. What could be the reason for that?
