3 Ways To Cancel AOL Account in 3 Minutes
Cancelling an AOL account can become a royal pain. As easy as it is to get an AOL account, they make it extremely hard to get out of it. This article lists three sure-fire time-tested methods of cancelling your AOL account in three minutes or less, one of them using the web. A fun bonus method is provided at the end.
How painful is cancelling an AOL account?
It took Dave Taylor 50 minutes. You can hear about Vincent Ferrari's painful experience in WNBC interview below or just listen to recording of his painful phone conversation to cancel AOL account.
If you are still not convinced you can read some testimonials.
How to cancel your AOL account?
Method 1: Cancel AOL by Phone - Sold computer and moving out of country
Call 1-888-265-8008 (Direct number of AOL Cancellations Department)
Say: "Cancellation." You'll need answer to your security question.
Now convey to the live attendant that you have sold your computer and moving out of the country.
Him: Why would you like to cancel your account?
Me: Uh, I sold my computer, and I'm not getting another one.
Him: So…you just sold your computer, and you're not going to go online?
Me: I'm also moving to Europe.
Him: You're moving to Europe?
Me: Umm, yep, that's it, I'm moving to Europe.
Thanks to Seth Bokelman for this method. It took him 3 minutes to cancel his AOL account. It worked for others too.
Method 2: Cancel AOL by Phone - Say "no thank you" to everything
Call 1-888-265-8008 (Direct number of AOL Cancellations Department)
Say: "Cancellation." You'll need answer to your security question.
Then a live attendant. They ask why you're cancelling the service. Just repeat: I didn't like it. I didn't like it. Don't be any more specific, or they'll go off into a tree.
Then they'll ask, are you planning to go on highspeed? Do you want high-speed?
No. No. No. No thank you. No thank you. Just repeat. You'll have to do this about five times. Amazing. Like talking to an automated attendant who can't understand what you're saying.
Don't explain anything, or it just takes longer.

Method 3: Cancel by FAX
If you prefer sending in your request through fax, please send it to us at 1-703-433-7283.
Notes:* If you choose to write or fax us, please include a brief note stating the nature of your request, the primary billing contact's full name, phone number, address and handwritten signature.
* In addition to that, for account security purpose please provide any one of the following:
o The master screen name of the AOL account
o The last four digits of the current method of payment (for your security, please include only the last four digits)
o The answer to the account security question of the master screen name.
* Cancellation will take effect within 72 hours of receipt of your request and AOL will send you a written confirmation. Please note that AOL LLC reserves the right to charge and collect fees, surcharges or costs incurred before your cancellation takes effect. Thank you for using AOL.
via Ao(Hel)l
You can also use this web form to send AOL a fax.
People had mixed successes with this method. mailman-zero commented at digg about his repeated success at using FAX to cancel AOL. It shouldn't take you more than 3 minutes to FAX this information to AOL.
Method 4 (Bonus): Swear in AOL Chat Rooms till they cancel
Here is the algorithm:
enter chat room
swear up a storm
get booted
enter chat room
swear
get account suspended for an hour
enter chat room
swear
"YOUR ACCOUNT HAS BEEN SUSPENDED INDEFINATLY"
This method was successfully used by digg user dgen_x.
Note: If you are still unable to cancel your AOL account I strongly suggest that you file a complaint with Federal Trade Commission (FTC). They are there to protect American consumers. Visit their website and click on File a Complaint link to file your complaint. It shouldn't take you more than 5-10 minutes to file.
Let me know about your experience in cancelling AOL.

Just tell them that you already know that they’re going to ask you ten million and one questions and that you just want to cancel. That usually shuts them up. My call was only 4 minutes

I canceled AOL 9 months ago. They attempted to bill me for another month after the fact. This was disputed by by credit card company. AOL then turned me over to collections 9 months later. They never sent a bill or prior notice. When I called to complain I was treated rudley and told that there was nothing they could do just pay the $23.90. I refuse to ever deal with AOL again.
January 27th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
They really don’t understand the word “cancellation” it took me 20 minutes to cancel the second time around because the first time i called and tried to the guy just hung up on me. Ughh…
January 30th, 2007 at 6:21 pm

Even Faxed, they dont stop!! Faxed again..they continue!! Im so fed up…Once I called, and just because I dint know my security ?, they said they cant continue…WHY?
Yet, why do they bill me, to only credit me??? Over and over and over!!

I told them the truth, I ordered another internet subscription and i cant break the contract for a year. I got immediate cancelation!
March 7th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
Look, I decided to fax my request after having the same type of discussion on the phone with an AOL rep. I am still unable to get this account cancelled!@@ Is there some federal government or law they are breaking? Can I contact someone. I have kept copies of the fax and everything - they are still not cancelling. What can I do?
March 10th, 2007 at 10:47 am
It worked. I cancelled my AOL account in 3 minutes. When a live person comes on the phone and they ask why I was cancelling, I just politely said I didn’t want to answer any of their questions, I just wanted to cancel the account. It Worked!
March 11th, 2007 at 7:24 pm
We are both disablied;on SSI only. I asked AOL if they had any discounts for pepole on a very fixed income. They raised my bill 3 times;they went up all three time. I have to say that your service is not for us. Please just cancel any account you find in mine or Debra Young. The phone numbers that you may have are 860-563-1667 or 860-257-0079. Thank You: Michael K. Morris and Debra L. Young

OH MY GOD! I had no idea what I was getting into.
I opened the aol account 3 years ago, gave the computer away to one of my kids 2 years ago, and cancelled, or I thought I did, the account. NOT SO.AOL has been debiting my checking account 11.95 per month for over 2 years,I have called
several times to try and resolve this. Finally,
just this morning spoke with someone whom spoke good enough english to understand how”frustrated” I was, I requested a refund for the 24 months and
they are sending me $23.90 instead of the $286.80 that I have been billed, IS THIS A JOKE OR WHAT!
The coustomer services rep that I spoke with assures that as of today I’am no longer a member of AOL> Thank the Good Lord above.

May 11th, 2007 at 6:33 pm
I just called at 8:30 p.m. tonight to cancel my aol service of 11 years. To my delight and surprise it only took 8 minutes!
May 17th, 2007 at 11:33 am
Moving to Europe worked like a charm! 2 minutes with the automated voice and another 3 with the live person and I was home free…
May 24th, 2007 at 7:14 am
I had cancelled my aol account some time in january or early february over the phone since I was going away for army training than Afghanistan for a year long deployment. I looked up my bank statesment online and found a payment had been made to aol as recently as last month for a service I thought I no longer had… funny how this whole cancellation thing works. I am in a forward operating base with out fax machines, I do have internet that I am paying way too much for and access to morale phones but I’m suppose to use the phone card time talking to family and friends on aol support to re-cancel my account… again?? do you know if aol customer support has an actual e-mail address that I can send an e-mail to? aol was fun and all but the fun isn’t there and neither is the love.
May 26th, 2007 at 5:59 pm
Im about to cancel my AOL. I faxed the request and told them my laptop was stolen and that I have no reason to have the AOL service if I dont have a computer to use it on. In addition, my parents have a computer but its THEIR computer so I have no right to add a service to it. I don’t think there is a way around THAT reason!! If they refuse to honor my request, the Better Business Bureau will do it for me.
June 4th, 2007 at 1:04 am
i was wondering if there was any way to change the master account to another screen name without having the master account password. my father died a few months ago, he was the master user. my mom called aol and they said that they couldn’t do it- that my mom would have to cancel our service and start over meaning we would lose all of our email addresses. is there something we can tell them that will get them to do it or is it even possible?
June 6th, 2007 at 9:50 am
Are you people really that fucking retarded that you think this page is actually owned, operated, or otherwise even read by someone at AOL? Why are you morons saying “how do i change my screenname” and “plz stop billing me” here?!!
Christ Almighty, people… grow a brain cell!
Meanwhile, thanks to the author for this great resource, it’ll help me help other people ditching that AOL crap.
June 13th, 2007 at 9:33 pm
thanks for not answering me douchebag. way to go on a rant instead of being helpful.
July 2nd, 2007 at 6:46 am
If you are concerned about being billed after you cancell AOL, call the credit card company tell them you have lost your card. In about a week you will have a new card with a new number and AOL will not be on the new card, as simple as that.
July 2nd, 2007 at 6:58 am
@Laura
If losing email addresses is your only concern then I suggest that you should simply create new addresses at GMail. However in this you will lose all your existing emails. Also you will have to send your new email addresses to all your friends and relatives. The upside is that you will be free from AOL forever or at least till Google lasts.
July 12th, 2007 at 5:19 am
I got a new debit card and canceled my old one so they where unable to bill me. Then they canceled it for me.
July 20th, 2007 at 10:29 pm
It took me about 10-15 minutes to find a telephone number to get a live person on the phone. I spoke to a nice guy, although it took me 14minutets to complete. They said it will be about 7-10 day for written copy in mail to come to me. Good luck everyone else. I know it better be cancelled, or else.
July 25th, 2007 at 1:00 pm
took me three phone calls and only about 5 mins. I said that I just didn’t need it. As he tried to talk me out of it and said (loudly) I just don’t need it and he said OK ~ cancelled! woo hoo. Let’s hope it worked.
July 27th, 2007 at 3:10 pm
just tell your credit card company to stop accepting charges. worked for me.
July 31st, 2007 at 10:58 am
I just canceled. One phone call and it took 5 minutes. When asked why I was cancelling, I told him we had decided as a family to get rid of our computer. He tried to sell me and I listened patiently, but then I told him that we were getting rid of the computer and getting completely off email. He tried to sell me one more time about access from library or work, and I told him again we were getting completely off email and then he cancelled the account and gave me a cancellation number. They also told me it would take 7-10 days for a written copy in email to come to me. What a crock–they could generate that while on the phone if they wanted to. Still, pretty painless. I’ve made a note to follow up, because I don’t trust them.
August 8th, 2007 at 4:07 am
i have 6months to go before my aol agreement is over i then wish to cancel my account i pay by debit card how do i do this i live in birmingham
August 12th, 2007 at 3:40 pm
I just cancelled. It took one phone call to this number - 1-800-827-6364. Total time 6 minutes. It was all automated and I received a cancellation number. I tried to go to AOL.com after I cancelled and it asked me if I wanted to re-join using my old account, so I guess it worked. I feel so FREE!!! I think they’re aware of the frustration and have changed their cancellation tactics to make it easier. They have enough enemies already!

Dear sir,
You billed my account at Pataraporn Ratanasuban AMEX cards for over 2 years for the account that I never use. Please cancel my account. Why are you charging me?

Thank you very much.

Tried to cancel months ago. Credit card expired and aol couldn’t charge credit card for last 4 months. Now they say we pay or they are sending it to collections. Have not used aol for months.
September 7th, 2007 at 11:20 am
Just tell the good folks at aol that you don’t need their service anymore because you are goiing to jail.

The automated voice menu is annoying as all hell, but the live agent I spoke to (Dave) was friendly and helpful.
I told Dave that I needed to cancel my account because I don’t use it anymore. As he launched into the mandatory “saves” scripting I mentioned that I had worked for AOL from 2000 to 2003 (which is true), and politely asked that we cut to the chase — which we did.
4-minute phone call.

Hello,
Man oh man! AOL…Is either one stupid Internet Service or the brightest…
I posted earlier, in this on AOL! I havent used their service for about 6 mts. Now, when I thought I was cancelled…I WASN’T!!
I went to Netzero, ok, have had them since AOL. But, I, just for the heck of it, clicked the AOL Icon…IT’S STILL ALIVE!!! But wait, why havent I been billed???? HELP! Why is it still alive, no billing???
Im really scared here, that they will only come back around and say…You have been using it, never cancelled!!! See, their ‘brightness’?
I called, I faxed…over and over and over! Went to Netzero, AOl never billed again! Months now, NO BILLS…But, how is it, my service is still on, and NO DEBIT card is used with them anymore???
SCAREY!!!!!
Who is funding this account? And why me? I have tried it all people, to cancel with them, nothing works!!
HELP…..

I just called to cancel my free subscription with AOL and I didn’t have any problems at all. The total length of the call was 9 minutes 6 seconds. They must have really gotten better!

You call up, you tell them you have 2 weeks to live, you are settling your affairs so that your family doesnt have to take care of crappy details…they are already torn up about things….if they ask or say anything off the cancelation topic, start crying.
November 29th, 2007 at 6:55 pm
I DID IT! (I Hope) Took 9 minutes.
Thanks for the wisdom I gleaned from many of the testimonials. I set my expectations low for the phone call. Called that “other phone#”….a few transfers, some waiting, and a fairly pleasant guy canceled account for me and switched it to free. No further charge to my VISA. Said he would send an e-mail confirmation to me to that effect. I am hesitant to go to aol e-mail, as I am afraid of being duped somehow. Is mine an unrealistic concern? Anybody have advice/experience?

Just cancelled my AOL account and it was fairly easy. It took about 10 minutes and the person on the phone was very polite and gave me my confirmation number. No yelling, no screaming…but I’ll still call my credit card to make sure they don’t charge me.
January 10th, 2008 at 9:17 am
Montgomery wrote to me via contact form his experinces with cancelling aol account in under 3 minutes:
Hi!
Just thought I would let you know that I cancelled my AOL account in about three minutes in this manner. I went through all of the bull from the automated attendant then was sent to a customer service rep. After, of course, repeating all of the previously requested information I explained that I could no longer afford the services. She (the vile rep) told me I was paid until the next month and then explained that by going on AOL job search I could find a job that would allow me to afford AOL. She asked if this would be helpful. I (unwittingly and just because) said yes. At this point she noted that I was on the cheapest version available of AOL and that I would receive my bill for ONLY $9.95 per month. Then she says “OK?†I said “No! I don’t want the account. I am through talking! Cancel the account!†Then I hung up. I then got online and discoverded all of the horror stories about cancelling AOL. My thoughts ran to words that I won’t type to you. Much to my surprise when I called a few minutes later to (I figured) recancel the account it was already cancelled. The short version would be tell them to cancel it and that is it and then hang up on them!!!
January 14th, 2008 at 5:49 am
Aol are the worst for shutting down accounts. I have had up to five computers online here p.w. access only. So no one else could use it. But the kids get this friggin AOL disc from just about anywhere, put it in and because my credit cards are on file boom I get billed for delinquint accounts from years ago because the jerkoffs never cancelled it. I won’t have any more of those in my house. If I find one I shoot it full of holes before I burn it in the wood stove. Maybe they need to be silver bullets.Aol we are done with you.
January 14th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
I have used AOL for about 8 years. I now have 2 small children and just don’t have the time or the energy to use the computer like I use to. I called AOL to cancel my account and the customer service representative gave me the run around. I am going to try faxing the cancellation notice and see if this will get some action.
January 15th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
From ALL the reading I have done,(Plus my own most recent experience today of the letter I sent AOL to their posted address being returned to me as UNDELIVERABLE. 40 more cents wasted due to them.) it seems to me that how long it takes on the phone to get them to tell you that you are cancelled is not the problem. The problem is whether you are REALLY CANCELLED, which you won’t know until you stop getting billed. So let’s stop saying “I did it! It only took 4 minutes!”. Cause you haven’t achieved anything until you really aren’t getting charged anymore. Otherwise the nightmare continues and the “successful” phone call with them was just more wasted time.
I’m ready to try continuous faxing. Every day I’ll fax them, and if I don’t get a letter of confirmation the next day, I fax again..Repeat daily.

AOL used to have a feature wherein you could take your screenname to a new account, if, for example, you and a another person had an account together and you wanted to cut ties with that person, keep your screenname, and start your own account. Does anybody know if this is still possible? I have a free AOL account, and that does not include any type of customer service. My ex-boyfriend would like to keep his screenname but I don’t prefer to look at it every time I sign on to my account. Thanks!
January 29th, 2008 at 10:45 am
i just have a free email account with them that i’d like to cancel and close the account…i don’t get billed for anything so i tried calling and get someone in india who says i can’t cancel it then i faxed it to the same number listed above and it’s supposed to be cancelled in 5 days and nothing…so it’s unbelievable that i just can’t cancel a free email account…can anyone help??? if you go to the aol.cancel.com and get to the right page then it takes you to some copyright infringement bs??? anyone have any answers???
February 3rd, 2008 at 1:52 pm
cancel this free account I did not download it as there is alot of other people including children that use this computer and I do not want this on my computer.
February 4th, 2008 at 4:25 pm
Thank goodnes I found your site…I used the first method with small revision. I said that I was moving and sold the computer to a neighbor. I also said that I would not be getting another one for over a year. He asked a couple simple questions and poof…now they\\\’re gone! I would not been able to do it without your help.
Thanks
Doug

Hey thanks sooo much for your 3 minutes solution to erasing an aol account. Ive been trying to delete one of my screen names forever now, and i literally did it in LESS then 3 min!!!!
April 27th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Called the 888-number and since I did not know the screen name, got to a live person. Was never asked any security questions, only needed the phone number for the account and after only a few annoying repetative questions, got the account cancelled and a confirmation number. Was told would also get a letter verifying cancellation.

I just found AOL’s online form for cancelling and filled it out. I didn’t want to wait another day to call them, since they close at 5pm.
August 27th, 2009 at 7:41 pm
please cancel this e mail address because can’t read& open .thanks..
September 6th, 2009 at 11:38 am
Just go to AOL click on customer support and search CANCEL ACCOUNT, then it will take you to bill.aol.com and you can change your account after answering a security question. They will send a confirmation email within 10 days. At least that’s what it said.
September 10th, 2009 at 5:10 am
I am so appalled by AOL news and the commentators that I can no longer look at it.
September 23rd, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Hey I tried to cancel my aol account via the phone initially and was told they were experiencing technical difficulties accessing my account eventhough I went through all of the verifications they asked to pull up the account, anyway I was told to call back later or go online to “aol keyword cancel”, that didn’t work either. After reading your suggestions here, I called back and used the sold my computer and moving out of the country scenario and IT WORKED! I was able to have my account cancelled immediately. THANKS!!

I went through with all their questions and billsh*t, call was still under 3 minutes.
