WordPress Patch Update From 1.5.1.2 to 1.5.1.3 Now Available

June 30th, 2005

WordPress developers have posted yet another "security" update. Again, as always, you have to delete everything (except wp-content/ and config.php) and re-install from scratch. If you are, like me, tired of these frequent updates (after having finally updated to 1.5.1.2) then this patch is for you. With this little patch (24K zipped) (assuming you are already on 1.5.1.2) you will be updating just the 5 affected files.

Overview

This plugin adds a copyright message to your feed items. No customization is required. This acts as a deterrant to feed-stealers (you heard the word first here) who unscrupulously and blatantly displays your full feed contents (often with their own advertisements) in their site(s) without your permission.

It doesn't affect when only excerpts are shown nor it adds anything to the feeds when you decide to publish only article summary in your feeds.

Angsuman's Feed Copyrighter Plugin for WordPress 1.5 and above is of the class of upload-activate-and-forget Plugins (like WordPress 1.5 Plugin to disable nofollow from comments or WordPress Referrer Bouncer Plugin to bounce referrer spammer bots), Plugins that simply work.

Note: Please refer to WordPress Plugins (Free) Developed and Supported by Taragana.Com for a comprehensive list of all the plugins we have developed and provide for free. Any new plugin development requests (or enhancement requests) should also be indicated there as comments.

Update: This plugin has also been tested on WordPress 2.3.x.

One of the best ways to prevent plagiarism of your work is to clearly mark it as yours. Covered previously on this site, the Feed Copyrighter Plugin is a simple plugin does exactly that.

It is a simple plugin that adds a short copyright notice to the footer of each feed entry. By default, this notice warns users that, if they are reading the content on any site other than the original, the person is guilty of copyright infringement. However, the plugin can be trivially modified, even by a non-coder like myself, to say just about anything else, including express a Creative Commons License.

This plugin is also completely combatable with Feedburner and most other feed plugins. All in all it is a simple install and simple set up that can work wonders for your feed.

Simple Thoughts Blog is now Slashdot Proof

June 23rd, 2005

I installed the wonderful WP-Cache 2.0 plugin by Ricardo Galli. It incorporates the features from the previous Wordpress caching plugins like Staticize and Staticize Reloaded. My previous attempt in using Staticize was unsuccessful. This plugin however gave me no problems. This plugin is very efficient in reducing download time of pages as you can easily verify with wget. It belongs to activate-and-forget class of plugins, something which is close my style of thinking.

Free JSP, Servlet Hosting Provider

June 23rd, 2005

I was a long time user of mycgiserver.com which is the first and only provider of free JSP Hosting that I am aware of. As some of you know it was saved at the last minute by Rick H of JavaLobby fame, who supported continual survival and health of the company. The site was renamed as MyJavaServer.com.

First WordPress, then Syndic8 and now Financial Times! Link Spammers Demonstrate Upward Mobility

June 21st, 2005

First we had WordPress which sported tons of hidden spammer links by ingenuous use of negative CSS positioning. Then Syndic8 decided not to be left behind and joined the fray. Later both of the sites were somewhat forced to remove the offending links due to falling Google rank (read zero) and possibly to some extent due to the unwanted attention it generated.
