October 18th, 2009 Film, TV producer Daniel Melnick dies at 77LOS ANGELES — Daniel Melnick, the producer who brought gutsy, smart movies like "Straw Dogs," ''Network" and "Midnight Express" to the big screen, has died at his home in Los Angeles. He was 77. His son, Peter, tells the Los Angeles Times that Melnick died Tuesday of multiple ailments.

October 16th, 2009 Emmy Award-winning movie maverick DANIEL MELNICK has died after battling lung cancer. He was 77. The former head of production at MGM and Columbia studios made his name by signing off on bold and often controversial films like Straw Dogs, Network and Making Love.

September 25th, 2009 Celebrated British playwright TOM STOPPARD has been awarded Japan's top arts prize, taking home a cheque worth $158,000 (£105,335). The star was named among five recipients of the Praemium Imperiale, alongside Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto, Austrian pianist Alfred Brendel and fellow Brits Zaha Hadid, an architect, and sculptor Richard Long.

September 21st, 2009 MARIAH CAREY and OPRAH WINFREY's new movie PRECIOUS scooped the top award at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday (19Sep09). The movie, a gritty drama produced by talk show host Winfrey and featuring singer Carey, was honoured with the People's Choice award at the annual event in Canada.

Oprah is executive producer of the African-American film based on the novel "Push" by Sapphire.

August 6th, 2009 JACK BLACK's raucous rock duo TENACIOUS D will replace the BEASTIE BOYS on the bill for the upcoming Outside Lands festival. The San Francisco, California event was one of many the Beastie Boys were forced to scrap after rapper Adam Yauch was diagnosed with cancer last month (Jul09).

August 3rd, 2009 Award-winning American composer MARVIN HAMLISCH is to be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at Belgium's Ghent Film Festival, marking his outstanding career.
