Review: Hipster poet Mike Doughty keeps it simple on his latest disc, 'Sad Man Happy Man'October 9th, 2009 Review: Mike Doughty keeps it simple on his latestMike Doughty, "Sad Man Happy Man" (ATO)
Mike Doughty took some heat from a few longtime fans for the bright pop he used to great effect on his last outing, "Golden Delicious."
Not one to ignore those who have stuck by him for 15 years, Doughty doesn't disguise the fact that he's catering to fans on his latest, "Sad Man Happy Man."
This isn't a bad thing, but that implies "Golden Delicious" was. It wasn't. Slightly darker in tone than "Delicious" and relying heavily on his syncopated acoustic guitar — though Andrew "Scrap" Livingston provides some nice work on cello — Doughty's wit still shines through his nasal, hip-hop vocal style.
Music Review: Gossip add dance tunes to rock mix, with help from Rick RubinOctober 6th, 2009 Music Review: Gossip add dance tunes to rock mixGossip, "Music for Men" (Columbia)
For any rebellious gal who's slashed her hair and skirts short and not cared, Gossip's "Dimestore Diamond" is nothing short of an anthem. It's the best song on "Music for Men," the trio's newest album, which diverges from the band's usual bluesy garage rock to beat-centric dance tunes sleekly produced by Grammy winner Rick Rubin.

Music Review: Living Colour's 1st studio CD in 5 years offers plenty of genre-hoppingSeptember 15th, 2009 Music Review: Living Colour cranks music blenderLiving Colour, "The Chair in the Doorway" (Megaforce)
Living Colour chose a location near Prague to record its first studio album in five years, yet decided against including any Czech folk or Dvorak covers on "The Chair in the Doorway."
That's a surprise, because as hard-rock bands go, Living Colour has always displayed an unusual ability to mix many influences. The musical blender is at work again on "Doorway," an album that rivals the NYC quartet's seminal early work two decades ago.
Music Review: Miami's Pitbull growls and brings the goods on his new album 'Rebelution'August 31st, 2009 Music Review: Pitbull brings the goods on new CDPitbull, "Rebelution" (J Records)
If you've been out of the rap game longer than, oh, about 10 minutes, the next thing you do is invariably called a comeback. This is where Miami-based Pitbull posits himself, out to prove he still a hitmaker with his latest album "Rebelution."
Hits are measured in a multitude of ways, but suffice it to say this is a strong return to form for Mr.
Music Review: French DJ-producer David Guetta throws a big party on 'One Love'August 24th, 2009 Music Review: Guetta's new CD is one big partyDavid Guetta, "One Love" (Virgin Records)
Listening to David Guetta's "One Love" is like partying at a multilevel European nightclub — bright colors shining, speedy beats bumping and intoxicated (or sober) boys and girls dancing the night away — all while vocals from R&B singers blast in the background. And the club's VIP section is packed: The Black Eyed Peas, Ne-Yo, Akon, Estelle and Kelly Rowland make guest appearances on "One Love."
Though all those stars lend solid vocals to "One Love," the songs that feature the lesser-known singers are what make the CD an enjoyable one.
Music Review: Loudon Wainwright III explores legacy of Charlie Poole in an entertaining lessonAugust 24th, 2009 Music Review: Loudon Wainwright III explores PooleLoudon Wainwright III, "High Wide & Handsome — The Charlie Poole Project" (2nd Story Sound Records)
Charlie Poole was a rambling, roguish, alcoholic, illiterate, banjo-playing hitmaker born in a North Carolina town that no longer exists. He became a star in the early days of the record business, then died following one last booze binge at age 39 in 1931.
Music Review: Third Eye Blind's latest, 'Ursa Major,' their best since eponymous 1997 debutAugust 17th, 2009 Music Review: Third Eye Blind's latest a gemThird Eye Blind, "Ursa Major" (Megaforce). Following a six-year break between full lengths, alt rock veterans Third Eye Blind again walk a fine line between aggression and a deft pop sensibility on their latest, "Ursa Major."
Frontman Stephan Jenkins still knows his way around a catchy hook (even those who hated the "do-do-do's" of 1997's "Semi-Charmed Life" probably couldn't get it out of their heads) but he never skimps on throwing down a hard riff or unleashing a scream to get his point across.

Music review: Son Volt's newest CD, 'American Central Dust,' a lovely mix of heartland twangJuly 21st, 2009 Music Review Son Volt's newest album a lovely mixSon Volt, "American Central Dust" (Rounder)
Son Volt's newest album "American Central Dust" oozes the kind of sultry alt-country heat that seeps into your ears. Leader Jay Farrar may get less attention than Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, his bandmate in seminal '90s band Uncle Tupelo, but his talent as a singer-songwriter is abundantly clear on "Dust."
Farrar's world-weary twang and poetic, politically inspired lyrics elevate such tunes as "Down to the Wire" and "When the Wheels Don't Move," with its distorted guitar and railing against the car industry.
