WASHINGTON - Typing an SMS while behind the wheel increases the risk of crash or near crash by 23-fold in Truck drivers, according to a study.

Researchers at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute also found that truckers were six times as likely to crash while dialling and nearly seven times as likely when simply reaching for an object like a cell phone.

The New York Times reported that the study used video cameras installed in truck cabs over a period of 18 months.

However, the results are not limited to truckers, for car drivers were also found to be 1-2 times as likely to be involved in a crash when dialling or talking on the phone, reports CBS News.

In fact, recent studies have shown that even the hands-free devices - required by law for drivers in New York, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. - don’t reduce the risk compared to talking while holding the phone. (ANI)
