LONDON - A new study suggests that British people, on average, spend over two years of their lives bored to tears.
Scott O’Donnell of www.triviala.com, which commissioned the survey, says that the typical adult wastes almost six hours a week feeling completely and utterly bored with life, which is the equivalent of 13 days a year, or 786.5 days over the average adult lifetime of 60.5 years. he main reason for the boredom was “having no money”, O’Donnell said.
“This survey is quite depressing, as it shows that most people are dissatisfied with the humdrum of daily life,” the Telegraph quoted O’Donnell as saying.
“It comes as no surprise to learn that a percentage of us are bored with work at times, and deciding what to eat on a daily basis can be tedious. But it’s easy to avoid the dullness of television adverts, Big Brother and reality television as there are other simpler ways to enjoy life,” O’Donnell added.
The researchers say that 55 per cent of those surveyed said that they got bored of having to watch the pennies and budget to get through the month.
According to them, another 47 per cent of the people questioned said that they quickly became bored waiting in queues to be served.
Forty-five per cent participants said that listening to people whine about feeling ill bored them.
Other things that bore people included reality television, work, their social life, and eating the same food day in and day out.
Also on the list of top 50 things that bore people on a daily basis were feeling ill and golf on television.
In their study report, the researchers have revealed that 38 per cent of Brits said that they were bored of MP’s claiming dodgy expenses, while 32 per cent reported becoming impatient listening to hold music when phoning the bank.
For 32 per cent, traffic and congestion were the biggest bore, whilst 13 per cent were bored of taking the same journey to work everyday.
Over 10 per cent of the people were fed up with their wardrobe of clothes, and wished they could have a makeover.
For 17 per cent of people, dieting proved tedious.
Sex life, waiting for nails to dry, worrying about job security, going to the gym, losing the football, and waiting for a baby to be born were among other things that bore Brits.
Scott O’Donnell added: “Seven out of 10 people polled admit they log onto the internet when they are feeling bored and this can be a great way to keep the mind occupied.”
The survey even revealed that people were most likely to feel bored at 3 o’clock in the afternoon.
Logging onto the Internet was found to be the biggest means for people to alleviate their boredom.
Fifty-one per cent people said that they watched TV to get rid of boredom, while 47 per cent said that they ate.
